24. Hide files extensions: This is commonly used by malware to trick the user. By hiding file extension, a user doesn't know whether a file with folder icon is an exe file or just an ordinary folder.
25. Disable File Extentions Check >> So changing this from folder options will be ignored!
26. Restrict Windows Update >> So the user cannot download security patches from Microsoft.
27. Disable Shut Down Command >> So the user cannot shut down the system normally.

Undo registry changes caused by viruses and spyware using Remove Restrictions Tool (RRT) v4.8.0.3

Here is another nice tracker for Indian (Hindi) movie fans. IMTorrents is a private torrent tracker specializing in BollyWood movies, Indian music and TV Series. If you are looking for HollyWood blockbusters this obviously is not the place to get them. In fact, iMT does not track any MPAA rated movies. But it does track a lot of desi stuff so if you like Indian/Pakistani stuff this tracker is for you.

One nice thing I noted about this tracker is that it's minimum ratio requirement is 0.3. Even low bandwidth users should not have problems maintaining this ratio. In addition to that they have the entire Music and TV sections on free leech. iMT tracks close to 2000 active torrents and has a user base in excess of 20000 (at time of this post). They don't track any CAM or Pre-DVD movies so expect better quality stuff.

R5 rip of The X Files : I Want to Believe leaked

Active Desktop Calendar v7.58

Popular bittorrent site  Araditracker has been shut down. The exact reason for the shut down is not known yet but it is suspected that it was due to legal pressure. And it is highly unlikely that Aradi's BT tracker will come back online ever again.

There is no official word on the shutdown in their IRC channel yet. The following line is all that is there related to the shutdown:

Private Tracker Watch: Araditracker shut down

BitRefinery.eu is currently open for new members. This site was formerly known as Nemezyz.com. BitRefinery is a private torrent tracker specializing in games and appz. They have XBOX, XBOX360, PS3, PS2 and PSP games as well as a decent Windows, Mac and mobile applications collection.

According to BitRefinery stats, they have close to 60000 members. Anyway they don't seem to disable members for inactivity that often. I had an account there which I didn't use for around 2 months and it still wasn't disabled. That being said, there are a plenty of active members both on the tracker and on the forums. BitRefinery currently tracks close to a thousand active torrents. Apart from content and activity the interface is nice and I particularly like the default color scheme. Check it out and you will not be disappointed.

Private Tracker Watch: Bitrefinery signups open - For Console/PC games and Windows/Mac Appz

It looks as if the popular scene releases indexing site ReleaseLog (better known as RLSLOG) has been hacked. There was an automatic redirect in place earlier that redirected all visitors to a notification about a new site named Zerosec.ws. Zerosec.ws is supposedly the new site from ex-RlsLog editors. Now the redirect seems to have been removed and on the homepage is a post by the administrator account. Judging by the comments from editors, it looks as if they are barred from making new posts.

Around two weeks ago there was this whole drama about several of RLSLOG editors leaving the site due to a conflict with the admin.

RLSLOG IRC Channel now has the following topic:

* Topic is 'Yes RLSLOG.net has been hacked, please be patient all will be fixed soon.'
* Set by Flat on Fri Aug 29 08:59:57

Anyway hacking the site in a childish manner does not seem to be the right way to resolve the problem and I really hope this won't be then end of RLSLOG as it was really a nice site.

Update: It seems that Martin (RLSLOG admin) has regained control of the site and everything seems to be normal.

ReleaseLog (RLSLOG) hacked?

Microsoft has just released a new version (v1.8.0031.0,) of infamous Windows Genuine Validation (WGA) for Windows XP. This enhanced version of WGA is supposed to have improved detection and will enforce Vista like anti piracy measures on Windows XP. It will display an annoying reminder "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting" whenever a pirated version is detected. Additionally, it will reset the desktop wallpaper to a blank black screen every 60 minutes.

You can change the wallpaper manually but that would be a pain in the ass to do every hour. One thing you can do is that you can use a simple wallpaper changer tool and schedule it to change the wallpaper every hour, right after WGA resets the background to black. The message and wallpaper changes will not go away until you install a valid key and activate Windows properly.

The new version (v1.8.0031.0) of Windows Genuine Advantage , is distributed via Windows Update (KB905474) as well as through Microsoft Download Center . Pirated XP users who unknowingly download this will be in for a surprise. Not all users will see the update right now as it is just released and will be rolled out gradually to the huge user base via Windows Update.

Right now the pirated users are left with few choices;

1. Choose not to install KB905474 by setting Windows Updates to manual mode and then excluding KB905474 from selected updates.
2. Manually remove WGA from their machine via a removal tool such as RemoveWGA (You computer won't pass genuine validation so some updates will be off limits to you)
3. Purchase a legitimate version of Windows XP - Oh wait. You can't! XP is no longer sold so you will have to......Upgrade to Vista!

The real question will be as to how long will it take a scene group to crack this version of WGA as they did with so many times in the past.

WGA update (KB905474) for Windows XP will enforce Vista like anti-piracy measures

One of the most annoying things I find with reinstalling Windows XP is running Windows Update for hours to re-download all those new updates (which are not integrated into my XP installation CD). It used to be a matter of minutes back when Autoptacher offline editions were being released but MS crapped all over it by sending them a Cease and Desist (C&D). RyanVM's Windows XP Post-SP3 Update Pack 1.0.0a lets you update your XP SP3 installation disk so that new upgrades are integrated into the installation cd itself.

The integration process is well documented and there is a separate software for that called RyanVM Integrator to aid in this process. Power users may opt to do this with nLite as well. It's not a complicated process and even novice users should be able to follow the instructions. Before you do anything, make sure that your Windows XP installation disk is SP3 integrated. Officially supported are English versions of Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home Editions.

This pack is designed to bring a Windows XP CD with SP3 integrated fully up to date with all of the latest hotfixes released by Microsoft since SP2's release. Gmail now displays time and IP of last account activity

The guy who beat the scene to crack BioShock and Alone in the Dark 5 has done it once again. The cracker who goes by the alias "DarkCoder" has released a working version of highly anticipated PC Game Bionic Commando Rearmed before any scene group has done so. Bionic Commando Rearmed is a download only game (no physical DVDs distributed) which is probably why the scene didn't bother with it. Anyway the game has received high ratings and has become a hit among many gamers.

I have seen several scene pre channels list this release but as far as i know DarkCoder is not scene. However the release naming (Bionic_Commando_Rearmed-DarkCoder) and file naming is done according to scene rules. It has already been nuked for a silly reason:

Bionic_Commando_Rearmed-DarkCoder.NUKE:homemade.iso

Which does not make any sense as the game does not come in a DVD in the first place. This ISO is obviously homemade but what matters is that this release does work. Expect your favorite bittorrent tracker to track this soon and expect a lot of people to download it as it is only 370MB in file size.

Sunbelt CounterSpy v3.1.2252

SceneLinks.ro (don't confuse this with SCL - The Clover which is a different site) has resurfaced after several months of downtime. This tracker was a good one when it was in full swing but due to some problem with Romanian authorities they shut it down and merged their user base with BitShock (Or at least that is what I think happened, the messages were all in Romanian). The site is back up now and seems to be in the process of recruiting new members. It's a general/0day tracker.

SceneLinks currently have 1000+ members and tracks over 200 torrents. Given my experience with this tracker in the past, I expect it would grow rapidly to become one of the better general trackers out there. They do have a user limit of 2000 currently so you may want to hurry if you want in.

Private Tracker Watch: SceneLinks signups open

Well it certainly took long enough. The latest installment in the Alone in the dark (AITD) series  was released on the 23rd of June. The game has just been cracked by P2P group TDM. There have been several non working scene releases in the meantime but this looks like the real deal. Expect private and public bittorrent trackers across the world to track TDM's release soon. Exclusive scene trackers won't track this release as this is released by a P2P group.

Anyway one thing is for sure; the server side activated SecuROM is definitely posing problems for the gaming scene. Usually it does not take scene groups long to crack a game after it's released (usually scene groups crack it before the street date). But games protected with the new SecuROM has posed problems for crackers, examples being Bioshock (Cracked after 13 days), Mass Effect (Initial crack missing SecuROM triggers thus causing buggy gameplay - fixed version appeared after about 2 weeks), AITD (Cracked after 2 months) and Bionic Commando Rearmed (Not cracked yet).

Bitshock certainly are expanding. They've up to now launched a general tracker, games tracker (which has been offline recently) and now a dedicated appz tracker. Appz Bitshock is a private torrent tracker specializing in applications for various Operating systems such as Windows and Mac.

There are just under 3000 registered users on this tracker and around 1900 torrents. Apart from software, related ebooks, wallpapers and web templates are also tracked by Appz Bitshock. Private Tracker Watch : 3 HD trackers open for signup : HDCity, High Definition Torrents and HD Transmission

Windows Vista looks a lot better than Windows XP but damn that shortcut arrow is too big. By the 'shortcut' arrow I mean the overlay icon which is automatically placed on desktop (and other) shortcuts in Vista. It almost covers 1/4 of the icon and there is no visible option in Windows Vista to change the size or remove it.

However, you can change or remove the overlay shortcut arrow using Vista shortcut manager (This program is also called FxVisor and was formerly known as Vista shortcut overlay remover). It allows users to either change the shortcut arrow to a lighter and smaller version, to choose a custom arrow of the user's choice or to entirely remove the arrow.

Private Tracker Watch : Midnight Torrents signups open

A DVD Screener of the latest Mummy movie (Mummy - Tomb of the Dragon Emperor) has been leaked to bittorrent sites across the world. It is not a scene group that is responsible for the leak this time around but the P2P group GRiM. The release is already on private trackers (those which index both scene and non scene releases - exclusive scene trackers won't have this) and it would be a matter of time till public trackers around the world begin tracking this release. The rip is 2CD (1.38GB) and GRiM have mentioned the source as "DVDSCR ISO DVDR". It has typical DVDSCR video and audio quality.

It has only been 6 days since nVIDIA released ForceWare 177.83 with PhysX support. They've released 177.89 beta drivers which again feature a significant update; OpenGL 3.0 support.  The release notes state "This driver is aimed at developers to start coding to the new OpenGL 3.0 and GLSL 1.30 features." I tried playing several games (Devil May Cry 4, Flatout: Ultimate Carnage and Assassins Creed DX10) without any issues although there was no noticeable difference in gaming performance over v177.83.

You can download v177.89 from nVIDIA Developer Zone and official driver download section will not feature this as it is still in beta. Note that the PsyX engine is not bundled with these drivers so you will need to download that separately if you did not install v177.83.

Private torrent tracker Bitshock.org is now open for new registrations. BitShock (BSk) is a general / 0day tracker which tracks both scene and non scene releases. At time of post, Bsk tracker tracks 1753 torrents.

Apart from the usual scene and p2p stuffy which is present in almost every general tracker, BitShock does have some nice packs of their own.

Watch for the 'BSk' tag at the end of torrent name to identify BitShock unique packs. Most of these packs are on freeleech. BitShock also does have a requests section through which users can post requests of movies/apps/games they want (but are not currently on the tracker) so that other users may share if they have the requested file.

It's about time we posted a private tracker update and we have quite good news at that; popular tracker Nordic-T is now open for signup. Nordic-T is a general/0-day tracker which has been around for a while. This tracker has a user base of 40000 and tracks 8300+ torrents at time of this post.

Private Tracker Watch: Nordic-T signups open

Sri Lanka Cyber Games 2008 (SLCG), the biggest PC gaming event in Sri Lankan history, has come to a close and official results of the events held have been released. SLCG 2008 was held on the 15th, 16th and 17th August 2008 at the BMICH premises with many Sri Lankan gamers taking part. The following gaming tournaments were held; Counter Strike 1.6, Call of Duty 4, DOTA (Defense of the Ancients), StarCraft and FIFA 08.

Counter Strike 1.6

New to the scene, team Xtrap did amazingly well to reach the SLCG finals as an untrained team, showing pure talent that should be fine tuned for future tournaments. Team Liquid showed Sri Lanka that they are leagues ahead of any other CS team in the country by breezing through SLCG to grab the CS champions title.

Call of Duty 4

A match worthy of a final, The Alliance and Infinity Gamers battled it out over three nail biting maps. In the end IG's dedicated practice and superior strats pushed them ahead and on to the title of SLCG COD4 champions.

We've already made a post about Bit Chec some time back but that was about an older build. Build 60 of Bit Che was released back in March and it features a lot of improvements over the previous version including support for more than 25 trackers being added.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the name Bit Che, it is an application which allows you to search over 66 different torrent sites (both public and private) via a user friendly interface. The searches can be sorted by site name, number of seeders, leechers etc. You can either choose to directly download the torrent file from within Bit Che (it will automatically detect your default torrent client) or you can visit the torrent description page on the tracker. For the searching of private trackers, you need to specify your user name and password for that site; this is a one time thing only and you don't have to do this every time you use the tracker.

This app is very useful if you use several different torrent sites and find it a pain to repeat the same search over in all of the sites. The only con i found with the application is that it lacks support for some of the high level trackers such as SceneAccess (SCC), SCL and SceneTorrents (SCT).

Tehconnection is a dedicated movies torrent tracker from the guys behind SceneTorrents (SCT). Our first post on Tehconnection.eu was sometime back in May, when the tracker was quite new. Private Tracker Watch: 2000 spots left in Tehconnection.eu - Dedicated movie tracker

Our previous post was about a site which you can use to view International Magazines via the Internet, free of charge. This post is about sites which allow you to download Electronic books of various categories right into your computer, free of charge. Please note that this is not a complete list; these are only the sites I have used and verified that the downloads they offer are reliable and what they claim to be. There may be plenty of other sites and if you know any such, feel free to share them by dropping a comment.

1. FreeBookSpot

This is one of my favorite sites. FreeBookSpot has nearly 5000 Electronic Books in its index belonging to various categories. Unlike most sites, it is not limited to programming/tech books. FreeBookSpot also indexes novels, fiction and even waay cooler stuff such as Star Wars novels packs!

Most of the books are in either Adobe PDF format or MS Reader .LIT format. FBS does not host every book in their servers. Most of the time they offer links to one click hosting sites such as RapidShare. It should not be a problem since most Ebooks are small in file size.

2. MSLIT - Microsoft Reader Catalogue of EBooks

MSLIT is a site dedicated to indexing Microsoft Reader .LIT format Electronic books. They have e-books related a wide variety of categories ranging from action/adventure/detective novels to programming and IT related stuff.

As mentioned above, the site only indexes books in .LIT format. You need Microsoft Reader (Freely downloadable) to view them. Although the site bears the Microsoft logo actually it has no official affiliation with Microsoft.

3. Knowledge is Free

Knowledge is Free is another excellent source of information which indexes more than 2500 e-books mostly related to tech/business and programming categories. This site is very useful if you are a student or is studying for examinations such as CCNA or SCJP. In addition to E-books, Knowledge is Free also offers links to several video tutorials and nearly 500 issues of international magazines.

4. eBookShare

ebookshare.net is one of the first sites I used to download books from. It mainly indexes IT and Business Development related E-books but has a significant number of Magazines indexed as well.

Unlike the sites mentioned before, eBookShare does not offer HTTP downloading links. Instead, it offers links to .torrent files so the users may download the book with the help of a bittorrent client. Majority of the books indexed are tracked by the Pirate Bay public tracker so additional registration is not needed.

5. FullBooks

FullBooks.com is another free e-Book hosting site which I found useful. It does not have a categorized index like most sites but indexes the hosted books in Alphabetical order. FullBooks hosts both fiction and tech related books.

All of the indexed books are hosted on the site itself. Longer books are divided into parts and each part is a .html file which you can view using the web browser. If you want to download the book into hard disk, just save the .html files.

6 sites you can use to download fiction, novels and other E-Books free of charge

Usually I am not a fan of Instant Messengers but what I saw on Dialog GSM site (Sri Lankan mobile service provider) inspired me to write this post.

Apparently Dialog is offering unlimited instant messaging at Rs.50 per months! Initially, I though the word 'unlimited' meant that once you paid Rs.50 per month there would be no additional GPRS charges based on the usage. But the tiny note on Dialog messenger page broke my heart; "Note: GPRS charges applicable while chat session is active" . So, why the hell would I pay an additional Rs.50 per month to Dialog when there are free (and better) alternatives available?

I've tried many mobile messengers some time ago on my Nokia N72 and one of the best I used was IM+. Here is the developer description of IM+

Although i've managed to find many Magazines in E-Learning and E-Book torrent trackers and web sites, i had never really come across a site dedicated to hosting international magazines. Mygazines.com is one such site which hosts a huge archive of Magazines belonging to many categories ranging from Information Technology to sports.

Initially i though this was just another one of those sites which hosted a bunch of useless free magazines but boy was i wrong. Mygazines.com hosts even the most reputed Magazines such as PC World and Computer Power User. Another good thing about the site is that there are even older issues available, in addition to the latest ones. The site is set to grow at a rapid rate with it already having a user base in excess of 15000. Even the site's users are allowed to upload and this will ensure new content being added to the site all the time.

The only minor drawback i found with the site was that it did not offer direct download links to hosted magazines. Magazines will open in an internal viewer instead of being downloaded to the user's computer in a single file. Anyway the viewer is user friendly, has a lot of features and renders the pages neatly and quickly.

If you are used to reading International Magazines, you should definitely check this site. There is a good chance of this hosting the latest copy of your favorite magazine, in electronic form!

A few days ago, we posted about the new Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009. Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 (KIS) features the same Anti-Virus engine but has a lot of new extra features and components for all round protection. Where do your downloads go?

Your files will be downloaded to:

uTorent folder\Data\%drive_C%\utorrent\Downloads

and you will be able to continue your downloads even on another pc. It is recommended not to change the download location.

How to update from previous versions:

If you are using previous versions of portable utorrent (1.76 or 1.77)
you can easily replace the "utorrent.exe" with the new one and you can yet resume all your previous downloads.

What is new in 1.8 portable by HDSoft:

1. The data folder will be automatically
   created if it is not present.
2. There is no temp directory for downloads anymore because it takes many time to move the downloaded file to another directory espacially on a usb flash disc.
3. The torrents categorized better than before.
4. Help and .lng files are included.
5. And many minor bugs fixed.

uTorrent 1.8 portable edition with resume anywhere capability

It was only a matter of time for this to be released by the scene. Russian trackers began tracking the R5 with Russian audio yesterday and scene group PUKKA has come up with an English audio version after only a few hours. The video is on par with DVD quality and the audio is from a TS source.

Expect both private and public trackers to soon track this torrent (some already do) and expect a lot of leechers on this initially as this is a highly anticipated movie. I personally loved the first part of the movie and the second looks good with an IMDB rating of 7.8.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army is a 2008 film based on the fictional Dark Horse Comics character Hellboy. The film is directed by Guillermo del Toro and is a sequel to the 2004 film Hellboy, which del Toro also directed. Ron Perlman reprises his role as the titular character. The film was commercially released on July 11, 2008 in the United States and Canada.

Hellboy 2 : The Golden Army R5 leaked to bittorrent

Out of the hundred odd private trackers we have posted , majority are 0Day/Scene trackers. Although most of these track the same content and have the same features, there have been several newcomers such as SCL and GFT that were different. Be A Scener seems to be one such site that is not just another 0Day tracker.

That being said, the site was launched on the 11th and is brand new. Already the member count has exceeded 750 and the site now tracks over 400 torrents; pretty impressive statistics for a tracker that is only two days old.

The main difference i noticed about this tracker is the uploads. Contrary to most other sites that use the help of human uploaders, BSC uses a bot which them call 'AUTOBOT'. AUTOBOT is responsible for uploading releases from scene related FTPs and topsites to the tracker without human intervention. The automated nature ensures that most scene releases are uploaded and good pre times but there is also the downside of some torrents not being seeded or being left with only 1 seeder. However automatic uploads is not all what BSC has to offer. They also have the entire site on free leech at random times! There is also the talk of packs and an archive sections being introduced.

Private Tracker Watch: Be A Scener (BSC) signups open - Scene releases tracker

Good news for gamers. nVIDIA has released the latest ForceWare drivers with PhysX as promised. ForceWare v177.83 will add PhysX support for all Geforce 8, 9 and 200 series GPUs. The official nVIDIA driver download site is not updated with v177.83 as of yet but there are 3rd party sites where you can download the official WHQL certified versions for both Windows XP and for Windows Vista (see end of article for download links).

I tried playing Unreal Tournament 3 with UT3 PhysX mod after updating the drivers to v177.83 on my Geforce 8600GT and the results were surprising. I did not expect the latest driver change to make any differences with my VGA since it was fairly old and is considered low end by extreme gaming standards. However there were noticeable changes in the way the game rendered explosions and character models even with my card. However there was also a slight performance decrease as well. I did not have time to experiment with the new drivers much but from what I have seen so far, the upgrade is well worth it.

nVIDIA releases ForceWare drivers v177.83 (WHQL) with PhysX support

Sport-Scene is a private torrent tracker specializing in sports content. You can download videos and other content related to many different sports ranging from Baseball to Formula 1. Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional v6.12 : File Recovery & Repair Software for Windows

TV Vault is a new private tracker that aims to specialize in rare and old television series. The first thing I noticed about this tracker immediately after I joined was the Gazelle codebase as only a handful number of trackers (including What.cd) use this as of yet.

Anyway it is still too early to say whether TV-Vault as a torrent site would succeed or not as the site is brand new. However it does show a lot of promise. There are not many trackers specializing in old TV series and the decision to go with the Gazelle codebase shows the admin's desire to experiment. At the moment there are 364 users and 25 torrents indexed but these numbers are sure to grow as the word spreads. As for the content tracked, here is what the administrator had to say about it:

"well, tv vault doesn't want to be like all the other tv sites out there, not because it's emo but because it appreciates that most new and popular tv is crap, just like we do. if you agree with us then we might have a beautiful relationship ahead of us"

Private Tracker Watch: TV Vault signups open - for older and rare TV Shows

Been using ESET's NOD32 for an year and well it did serve me well all this time. But one bad detection failure and updating troubles have prompted me to go for a different security product. My next choice was obviously Kaspersky; although I had never before used the product, I had heard many good things about it.

Kaspersky is no doubt a versatile virus fighter. It has several different protection modes including proactive protection. Once installed, Kaspersky's memory resident module will scan files, memory, web traffic, e-mail and instant messaging activity on the computer. It also gives you the option to install a phishing filter which blocks some 10000 phishing sites. It has a nice, clean interface but in my opinion they should have provided an advanced mode with more configuration options as power users would have liked to tweak the settings some more. Updating is easy and automatic update is enabled by default. Kaspersky Labs is doing an excellent job when it comes to delivering the latest definition; there is usually and update after every hour.

The only annoying thing I found about this product so far is the 'Analyzing modified or new program' window whenever you run an executable for the first time. It sometimes takes close to 1 minute to complete the analysis. Since this only happens when you run a program for the first time, most users will  get used to live with it.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 v8.0.0.454

Windows Live Messenger (formerley MSN messenger) is a hugely popular instant messaging client. Ever since it got re branded with this whole Windows Live thing, Microsoft ceased to provide standalone installer for it. That means, you have to download a small setup file called the windows live installer and then select the Windows Live products you want downloaded. The installer then downloads the selected products over the web.

This is all fine unless you have a computer that has limited connectivity to Internet (you pay per minute for Internet connection, you have a very slow connection etc). It can be a bitch to download the 16MB setup file over the web after each install on such connections. Fortunately, the standalone installer is still here.

Popular private tracker BrokenStones went offline when the Malaysian government pressured the ISPs to terminate some of the torrent sites hosted in the country. The loss of BrokenStones was felt strongly by the community as it was one of the very few Mac trackers on the net. Following BrokenStones demise, several new Mac trackers popped up they were not quite the same.

After nearly an year in development, version 1.8 of uTorrent has been released to the public. uTorrent is a free, lightweight, easy to configure and feature packed bittorrent client which has gained immense popularity over the years. It will be needless to say that ESET's NOD32 Anti Virus software is now one of the most popular security products in the world. As with any popular products, the demand for the product was high, even among software pirates. There were many pirated versions of ESET NOD32 and ESET Smart Security floating around the new for a while. Not only did these versions carry the full feature set, they could also download virus definition updates - a critical factor with any security product.

Many of these pirated versions were 'extended' trial versions. The cracks would extend the normal 30 day trial period to some 15000+ or 24000+ days. These 'extended' trials could connect to ESET official update servers and download latest definition updates just like any legit version.

In addition to the extended trials, there was another form of workaround for getting virus definition updates. These were 3rd party update servers. These servers, run by various individuals, were mirrors of ESET update servers but sans the authentication so that any pirated user could connect and download updates without issues. This method is not that popular since many go offline quickly and majority of the others get blocked by ESET.

However, a recent server upgrade by ESET may have crashed the party for users of pirated ESET products. The server upgrade has rendered most of the 'extended' trial versions useless. Although the trial period would still read as 15000+ or 24000+ days, the clients will no longer receive latest updates even when there are newer definition files available. Cracked versions will return the message "The virus signature database is current" even when it is not.

There is currently no permanent workaround that i know of to counter this latest move by ESET. However there is the odd exception such as some of the older cracks still working to date on some platforms and some beginning to work after a reinstall. Perhaps a scene group or a P2P group would be able to find a 'PROPER' crack in the near future.

When it comes to viewing .PDF files, adobe reader is probably the most used application. Adobe Reader evolved over the years with many new features being added after each revision. Since version 8, Adobe Reader comes with the Adobe Updater, a feature which I hated since the day I saw it.

Adobe Updater would check and download updates for Adobe Reader whenever the application is launched. This is good if you have a broadband connection but will simply suck if your computer does not have access to the Internet or if you are using a dial up connection. You can manually force it shut every time it runs but I found that pretty annoying. I've trying disabling Updating through preferences but this did not work. So here is what I did to kill the Adobe Updater for good.

Warning: The process below may disable updating of other Adobe products present in your system. If you choose to update any of the products at a later stage, you will have to download the setup files from Adobe site manually.

1. Browse to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe

2. Locate the Updater directory. This directory will be named Updater5 or Updater6, depending on the version of adobe products you have installed on your system.

3. Remove the directory (Updater5, Updater6, etc).

That should do it.

Microsoft has released a Windows Vista performance and tuning guide which spans across 14 pages. We can only but wonder why it took so long for MS to release this, considering the number of performance woes many users had with their Vista installations.

Tips and tweaks mentioned in the guide range from making changes to the default power plan to disabling unneeded services. Although there may be several hundred sites that have posted the same tweaks much earlier than MS, this guide is still worth checking out.

A new build of Winamp has been released with several minor bugfixes. Winamp was once the king of all media players but popularity of the application somewhat decreased with the original developers leaving the project. It still is a versatile media player which has the usual components such as a Media Library, Equalizer and Visualizations. Trojan Remover aids in the removal of Malware - Trojan Horses, Worms, Adware, Spyware - when standard anti-virus software either fails to detect them or fails to effectively eliminate them. Private Tracker Watch : BTZonE.ORG wrestling/MMA tracker signups open

Usually, ESET delivers two or three virus definition updates a day for ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 anti virus products. However, I noticed that my NOD32 had not updated for three days even though auto update was enabled. Whenever I tried a manual update, it came up with the message "The installed virus signature database is current". This was very unlike ESET and obviously something had to be wrong, and it was.

When I checked on ESET site, the virus definitions i had installed were not the latest. I had missed around 4-5 updates although NOD32 internal updater was saying my signature were up to date. Further searching on the net suggested that many other users were having the same problem.

How to verify if there is a problem with your update

First of all, you need to check if you actually have this problem with your installation of NOD32. It would be pointless to try and fix a non existent problem.

1. Right click your NOD32 taskbar icon and click 'open window'.

2. Select 'Update' from the left hand panel. Click on 'Update virus signature database'. If an update is being done, wait for it to finish.

2. Now select 'protection status' from left hand panel.

3. Note the number next to "Version of virus signature database"

4. Click here to visit ESET official page on virus definition updates. Verify the latest definition version listed on this page matches with your NOD32's definitions version (found in step 3).

If the two version numbers match, you do not have any update issues. If they don't then there is a problem so read on.

Workaround

At first, i though the problem was limited to pirated versions of NOD32. But according to posts made in several online forums, this is a problem with ESET's servers and affected legitimate versions of ESET products as well. Here is what i did to get around the problem:

(I use a extended trial version of NOD32. This workaround may or may not work for you, depending on the version and nature of your NOD32).

1. Manually delete the update cache of NOD32 or ESS. In Vista, browse to C:\ProgramData\ESET\ESET NOD32 Antivirus\ or C:\ProgramData\ESET\ESET Smart Security\ (depending on which software you have).Delete the updfiles directory

2. Right click your NOD32 taskbar icon and click 'open window'. On bottom left corner, toggle 'advanced mode' if not already selected.

3. Now select 'setup' from left hand panel. Select 'Enter entire advanced setup tree'. Select 'Update' from left hand panel of the window that pops up.

4. Click the 'Edit' button next to the 'Update server' drop down menu. Enter http://u49.eset.com/eset_eval on the top text field and press add. Press ok to close the dialog box. Now select the newly inserted server from the 'Update server' drop down menu and press ok.

Try a manual update now or wait for auto update. It worked for me.

Possible workaround for ESET NOD32 and Smart Security not updating with latest virus definitions - "The installed virus signature database is current"

Nero 8 Portable Edition

Popular torrent index site Newtorrents.info (NTi) is now back online after suffering from few days of downtime. At a first glance the site seems to be fully functional but a notice on the site says "We are still recovering our backups - some torrent downloads won't probably work until finished.".

Newtorrents.info is a public torrent indexing site. Although NTi does not operate a tracker of its own, the site is popular for it's superb index with extremely low number of fakes around.

According to several news sources, Sri Lankan Internet service providers (ISP) are issued with instructions to filter and block pornographic content on the Internet as per a presidential order.  First of all, we have nothing against pornographic content being illegal in Sri Lanka or whatever laws that apply to it. Long time readers will know that FILEnetworks has never advocated nor linked to any sort of pornographic material in any of our 700 odd posts so far.

That being said, we do have several questions over how this latest presidential order will be executed. There are many places and mediums to download porn (or any other material for that matter) via the Internet. But these mediums are not only used to distribute porn. For example, pornographic images are often transferred via E-Mail. But as any jackass may know, not only porn is transferred via E-mail; there are many other 'moral' uses as well. The same goes for video streaming sites, FTP sites, HTTP sites, IRC channels, Instant messages, Blogs, Forums and the likes. So how will the censorship be imposed? Will this be limited to several sites? If so, who will decide on which sites to be blocked? Will the ISPs be allowed to monitor and track user activity in direct violation of their privacy?

Right now there are a lot of question rather than answers. We sure do hope that Sri Lankan Internet users will not be deprived of new technology nor will have their privacy intruded, just to prevent few folks downloading porn off the net.

P.S. - Even if you block the shit out of internet, users will not stop till they find a way to unlock the 'now hidden treasures'. Hope this won't backfire and increase the popularity of porno sites instead.

Sri Lankan ISPs ordered to filter and block pornographic content on the Internet

I thought i would never live to see this day but here it comes. BitMeTV.org, considered by many as the mother of all TV torrent trackers, is now open for signup. It has a user base of 22000+ users and tracks around 19000 torrents, respectable stats for any private tracker. As for the content, BitMeTV tracks many of the Canadian and U.S TV shows aired since the 70s. And this includes torrents you can never find on any other site on the planet. If you are concerned about the 'elitism' of the site, this is a level 5 tracker.

Here is another nice little application which I've come to like in the past few days. In function, SRS Audio sandbox is a little similar to DFX. Once installed,  your computer's sound card output (regardless of whether you are playing a movie, browsing the web or playing a game) will be sent through the SRS Audio Sandbox, enhancing the sound output.  There are several different presets and speaker configurations to choose from. I've used this application with Windows Media Player 11 (SRS WOW effects turned off) to view downloaded movies which have 2CH audio and surprisingly the sound enhancement was noticeable. Keep it mind though, this will not be the replacement for a good sound card and a decent surround speaker system.
