A couple of days ago we featured on this blog theRenamer, a great software the could rename downloaded movie and TV show video files by automatically inserting episode names, titles, etc to the file name. While the software did an excellent job on renaming video files, it did not rename any associated subtitle files. As you might know, most computer applications, built in media players on DVD, Blu-Ray players & modern TVs require subtitle file names to match those of video file names for subtitles streams to display properly. When file names are mismatched, you will be left with the painstaking task of renaming each file manually, which can take quite some time if you are dealing with something like a TV show with multiple seasons. SubDude is a useful little utility that can automate this rename process and save you a lot of time.

To clear any confusion, SubDude does not only work with video files renamed using theRenamer. You can use it to automatically rename even downloaded subtitles. Following table shows how SubDude will rename the subtitle file of a single TV episode:

How this software works is pretty simple. It matches the season and episode numbers in video and subtitle files using regular expressions (RegEx) and renames the matches accordingly. Below are some instructions on how to use the app, in case you didn’t figure it out already":

1. Move all your subtitle files and video files inside a single directory (see notes below for additional details).
2. Launch SubDude. In the ‘Rename’ tab, browse and point to the directory with files you created in Step 1.
3. If you want to later undo the rename actions, check ‘Create and unDude file’ checkbox.
4. Press Go.

Important Notes (Quoted from developer page):

• SubDude assumes that every files in the folder are from the same show and checks season and episode numbers only.
• Subdude uses regular expressions to detect season and episode numbers. Most common patterns (TVShow-s04e01, TVShow-4x1 etc) are handled, however Subdude will eventually fail to detect season and episode numbers on certain files (TVShow401 etc). This problem is being worked on.

Pretty much all of us download TV shows and movies from the internet (let it be from file sharing sites such as BitTorrent trackers, direct download link forums or even by a legitimate means) and store them on our desktops, laptops, portable hard drives or media player PCs. However, most of the downloaded files have different kinds of naming conventions – for example, some shows have merely the season and episode numbers while some others carry episode name as well. What if you want to rename all your media files to a standard you like? Manually doing this for each file would be a tedious task (think about a show with several seasons). The is where theRenamer comes in. It’s an excellent utility that helps you automatically rename your media files. And it’s not just a batch rename tool either; give theRenamer a file (or a set of files) which just has the episode and season number and the app will automatically fetch the episode name online and rename the file accordingly.

You can fully customize the way your video files are renamed. Under default settings, theRenamer will strip off release group name and video quality details in file and add the episode name if its missing. theRenamer is able to fetch media information from four different online sources; IMDB, TV.com, TheTVDB and EPGuides.com. Below are some examples of renamed files (using default settings, without changing anything in the app after a fresh install):

Usage of theRenamer is very simple. To rename a file, all you have to do is the drag and drop and the app will do the rest. If you are dealing with multiple files, simply select all and drag them in – this tool is able to perform batch operations and will reformat all your file names in a couple of seconds.

Despite being an excellent utility, like all software out there this is not a perfect application. I got an “EPISODE TITLE MISSING” error for some files I tried to rename – this bug is apparently fixed now but I still got the error in the latest build (v7.5). Either way it’s just a minor annoyance and the fact remains this is a highly useful tool for anyone who downloads shows and movies online.

One of the more popular uses of BitTorrent is downloading TV shows. The ability to download newest episodes of latest TV shows as well as being able to grab complete season packs of even older episodes makes BT a highly attractive choice when it comes to this. If you download TV torrents using your PC, here’s an application you should check out. TVTrigger is a multi functional desktop app that allows you discover and download television series via BitTorrent. Not only does it provide detailed information about specific TV series but the app itself can act as a BitTorrent client, with a built in torrent search feature.

First up, the application is great at presenting detailed, organized information about both new and old TV series. You’ll be able to view a lot of info ranging from cast, crew, episodes details, network info, ratings and you’ll even be able to listen to a shows’ official soundtrack and watch episode trailers right from the desktop. You can either search TVTrigger’s database (which is claimed to include records of 3000+ series) or browse it if you are looking for a specific show. If not, you can discover new series through the app’s ‘Featured Shows’ and ‘Listings’ features.

You might not notice it at first but TVTrigger can act as a BitTorrent client – this is where things get really interesting. Not only that, it includes a torrent search feature where you can search for specific TV shows (there’s even a drop down menu with preset show names) right from the app. Searches can be customized by episode number, season number, etc. TVTrigger currently searches Mininova, VerTor, BTJunkie and ISOHunt. Once a search returns results, you can either download the torrent either using TVTrigger itself or using another BitTorrent client of your choice. This is probably illegal in some countries such as the US (after all, even RealDVD got banned there) but it’s supposedly legal in the country where it’s being developed; Egypt.

One of the downsides of this software (at least for me) is the lack of support for private trackers. If TVTrigger at some point integrates popular private TV trackers such as BitMeTV, TVTorrents.com, etc in its torrent search feature, that would make it a much much more useful tool for power users of BitTorrent.

Either way TVTrigger is still a decent app. It’s free so download and check it out.

Heads up - third series of the popular UK television series Robin hood has just started airing. First episode of season 3 has already been leaked on BitTorrent by scene group BiA (note that we are talking about the Robin Hood series that began airing in 2006). This series is aired in the UK on BBC One as well as on BBC HD. However thanks to BitTorrent technology viewers across the globe are able to enjoy the show. So far 38 episodes of this series have been produced – almost all of them can be found on public and private BitTorrent trackers for free download.

Good news for fans of the hit TV Show 24 (Twenty Four) – first four episodes of the show’s seventh season (S07E01, S07E02, S07E03 & S07E04) has leaked on P2P networks across the world. Although the releases seem to be real, some users have reported several (around 3) minutes of missing footage on the first episodes as well as some out of sync issues on some episodes.

The leaked episodes are XViD encoded rips of probably an early screener copy – click here for a screen capture to see the quality for yourself. If you are wondering where to download the torrent of the leaked episodes, well it’s pretty much everywhere. From The Pirate Bay to dedicated TV torrent trackers, several thousand peers are already downloading them. Note that this is not a scene release (released by fRoStY on p2p networks) and thus won’t be available on scene releases only trackers such as SCC and ScT. If you want HD quality rips (720p etc), you will have to wait for a scene release which can be expected within few hours after the episode is originally aired in the U.S.

If you didn’t know already, popular UK sitcom ‘The IT Crowd’ is back for a 3rd season. This show is definitely one of the funniest shows I have ever watched. If you haven’t watched seasons 1 and 2 yet, I suggest you download and watch them now (It’s too bad that each season carries only around 6 episodes). I was waiting for this ever since the pilot aired. I used to watch every single episode of the 1982 TV series in all four seasons. Then there was Team Knight Rider which I think sucked big time and had no real connection to the original storyline. That makes the 2008 series the first true sequel to 1982’s Knight Rider so I hope this show survives for several seasons just like the original. The 2 hour pilot of the 2008 series looked good (except for the ford ‘advertisements’) and the first episode looks even better. Needless to say that there are torrents of this episode all over the web and you may search for one using the links in Downloads section below.

Stargate SG-1 (often abbreviated as SG-1) is an American Canadian science fiction television series, part of the Stargate franchise. It begins one year after the events of the 1994 science fiction film Stargate. It was produced in and around Vancouver, Canada.

There are a lot of folks among us who use bit torrent (and other means) to download TV Shows. If the show is not in your language, you may feel the need for good old subtitles. But where can you find them? Most subtitle sites host subtitles for movies but are there sites dedicated to providing tv series subs? Fortunately, the answer is yes.

TVsubtitles.net is one such site. As the name suggests, its main focus is on subtitles for tv shows. As of 3/4/2008, the site index stats are as follows:

So i got the subtitle, how do i use it with my favorite show?

This is a question most of you know the answer to. But if you don't, that's ok; everybody's gotta learn.

Lets assume that your movie (or tvshow or whatever) file is mymov.avi and the subtitle file you just downloaded for this movie is mysubtitle.srt.

First of all you need to place these two files in the same directory.

Then you need to rename the files so that the file names look similar (Do not rename the file extensions).

Example- If you choose to rename the subtitle file:

Rename mysubtitle.srt to mymov.srt

Now you will have two files mymov.avi and mymov.srt

Place these two in the same folder and if you use even a half decent media player it should play the movie with subs just fine.

Team Knight Rider (TKR) is a syndicated television spin-off series of the Knight Rider franchise that ran between 1997 and 1998. The story is about a new team of high-tech crime fighters assembled by the Foundation for Law and Government (FLAG, formed by Wilton Knight) who follow in the tracks of the legendary Michael Knight and his supercar KITT. Instead of "one man making a difference", there are now five team members and each has their own computerized talking vehicle counterpart. Like the original duo, TKR goes after notorious criminals who operate "above the law" — from spies and assassins, to terrorists and drug dealers.

Team vehicles

Team Knight Rider uses five different vehicles for their missions; each with its own computer AI system like the original Knight 2000 vehicle. What differs these vehicles to K.I.T.T. is that they are specialized units. In addition, Garland had each vehicle installed with a fail safe, in this case, each vehicle had weaknesses intentionally built into them in case any of them went rogue, after the K.R.O. incident.

Danté (D.N.T.-1), a modified Ford Expedition sport utility vehicle driven by Kyle, but the truck has enough room to transport the entire TKR team and functions like a mobile command center. Danté's AI expresses himself in a haughty British manner and has no misgivings about making his driver and passengers feel uncomfortable. He is the ad hoc leader of the vehicles (if they'd ever listen to him) and he usually speaks on their behalf.

Domino (D.M.O.-1), a modified Ford Mustang convertible driven by Jenny. The AI's manner is sleek, sexy and flirtatious. She is also talkative and likes to gossip to the annoyance of the other TKR vehicles.

Attack Beast (B.S.T.-1), or just Beast, which is a modified Ford F-150 full-sized pickup truck with off-road capability and is driven by Duke. Beast's AI has a stubborn and argumentative attitude that talks tough and is not afraid to stand up to a fight. His favorite tactic is to crash through walls and surprise the enemy. Beast does not like to take orders from Duke or anyone else, but he is fiercely loyal and gets the job done. TKR member Jenny is the only one Beast will listen to, and his aggressive nature softens when she is around.

Kat (K.A.T.-1), a high-tech motorcycle that merges with her twin, Plato, to form the advanced High Speed Pursuit Vehicle, capable of high speeds and incredible maneuverability. Kat is driven by Erica and her AI has a polar opposite personality to that of her driver. Kat is always concerned with rules and regulations and is in constant conflict with Erica's amoral traits. Plato (P.L.A.T.O.-1), the other motorcycle that merges with his twin Kat to form the High Speed Pursuit Vehicle. Plato is driven by Trek and, like his operator, Plato is a nerdy brainiac completely consumed by facts, figures and data. Plato likes to quote television commercials and famous movie lines and talks in sort of a code that only Trek can understand. The two have developed a strange symbiotic relationship that the other TKR members can never figure out.

The IT Crowd is a British sitcom written by Irish director Graham Linehan and produced by British Ash Atalla for Channel 4.

The IT Crowd is set in the offices of Reynholm Industries, a fictitious British corporation in central London. It focuses on the shenanigans of the three-strong IT support team located in a dingy, untidy and unkempt basement - a stark contrast to the shining modern architecture and stunning London views enjoyed by the rest of the organization.

Currently, two series of six episodes each have been produced and recorded in front of a live audience, series 1 at Teddington Studios and series 2 at Pinewood Studios. Both the series are available for download via bit torrent.

No actual content was hosted on TV-Links, all content was hosted on external websites and the servers were physically located in the Netherlands.
