Launched in 2008, The Pirate Society (TPS) has become one of the most successful file sharing discussion forums currently online. TPS features BitTorrent news, discussions, invitation giveaways, requests, private tracker reviews as well as seedbox discussions, support and reviews. This forum is also known for its many tracker recruitment threads and insane number of direct connections to private trackers through the ‘Community reps’ model. While being an excellent file sharing forum and a gateway to the world of torrent trackers, TPS has mostly been a closed community. Public registrations on this site have almost always been closed and potential new members needed to pass an IRC interview conducted by TPS staff members. If you didn’t like the idea of going through an interview or didn’t have enough experience in the BT scene to make it inside, you now have another chance through The Pirate Academy.

The Pirate Society

The Pirate Academy is TPS’s latest project that opens up the site even to absolute newbies to the BitTorrent scene. With the launch of this project, TPS has essentially become an open registration BitTorrent forum and new members are now allowed to bypass the IRC interview. However, those who choose to do so will not immediately gain access to all TPS forum sections – instead, they will be directed to the Pirate Academy – a limited access forum that has ‘lessons’ and tests for new users. In short, new members who go through all the lessons and pass the test for each lesson, will gain entry into the fully featured TPS main forum. In case you didn’t get the idea, here’s a complete overview of how The Pirate Academy works. This description was quoted from a thread posted by Soopy on TPS :

The Pirate Academy

[BEGIN QUOTE]
We have two main forums available to anyone who has access to The Pirate Academy. These forums are called "Classrooms" and "Lounge". The Classrooms forum consists of 3 sub-forums called Lesson 1, Lesson 2 and Lesson 3. Each Lessons sub-forum will bring you to a thread that has the lesson material. Here's how it is mapped out:

  • Lesson 1 - Introduction to the Pirate Society. This lesson will teach the user how to use a forum and its features and what The Pirate Society is.
  • Lesson 2 - IRC Basics. This will teach the user how to user the basics of IRC. Some of it focuses on the popular IRC client mIRC while also keeping it general so the user can use the material with other clients.
  • Lesson 3 - Getting to know the BT Community. The last lesson teaches users about private bittorrent trackers by explaining what private trackers are, how they operate, and what you should do/shouldn't do.

The Lounge forum is a general forum created for new users who need help, have a question to ask, or just want to test out the forums features by creating general threads. We also have a dedicated IRC channel setup named #academy for users who need help and want answers quickly (and possibly give more incentive to learn IRC :)
The Pirate Academy will consist of 3 quizzes. One quiz for each lesson. The user will find the link at the end of each lesson at the last post which will bring them to the appropriate quiz. Once the user is done filling out the quiz and clicks Submit, it will be sent to our Graders Area where TPS staff will look over the submission and give it a grade. In order to graduate from the academy you must pass all 3 quizzes. If the user is already a New Recruit or higher, they will get the TPA Graduate icon. If the user is in the Initiate usergroup they will receive the TPS Graduate icon and be promoted to New Recruit.
[END QUOTE]

Initially, it might look like a lot of work to pass all the quizzes. However, in reality it’s not that hard even of you are a noob – the lessons are cleverly devised and well detailed along with rich instructions accompanied by screenshots – these let you in on all the information you need in order to pass the tests. Sure, it might take some time but passing will allow you full access to one of the better BitTorrent forums out there ( which has 9600+ users, ~100 community reps and 75+ tracker recruitment threads ).

TPS Full Forums
Image: A screenshot depicting part of TPS main forum. To unlock some of the sections seen here, members are required to progress up the user class system.

As we mentioned earlier, TPS is currently in an open signup mode. However, this is a little different from a regular open registrations period you’d often see from a BitTorrent forum. Again, the text below is quoted from the forum post by Soopy (one of TPS SysOPs):

How does The Pirate Academy fit in with open signups? Every new user who registers will start out as an Initiate. So, initially, they will have very limited access to the forums. This will allow us to keep new users in a controlled environment. The open signups are, of course, not definite and will be temporary. Our first open signups will close once we reach a certain amount of users so we can test out this system on a much larger scale. Depending on the results, we might open up again and increase the load.
Because the users do not require a screening process, we will be very strict with the Initiates. Every user coming in will be scanned against our failed interviewee's database and banned/disabled users. We will not hesitate to disable a users account if something comes up.

Open signups will be available only for a limited period of time so get in while you can. All users who apply through the register link below will gain access to The Pirate Academy

Site Name: The Pirate Society (http://www.thepiratesociety.org)
Signup URL
: http://www.thepiratesociety.org/register.php

In the meantime, IRC interviews will still be open – those who pass the interviews will immediately gain access to full TPS forums and will not have to go through The Pirate Academy.

    ahah good trackers?
those "good trackers" you speak of are only blacklisted because the trackers themselves asked themselves to be. Therefore TPS is only being polite to such trackers to not allow their invites to be given.

If you are so great then get access to all those "good trackers" yourself. good luck

What's up with the random off topic posts about BCG? I can guarantee that the dope who posted that won't last 2 weeks.

In regards to the topic at hand; Who would have believed me a year ago if I told them that Beagle would one day be speaking the truth about TPS? Keep it up brotha.

  12. Unknown // 6/13/2010 12:29:00 AM

Complete waste of time! Spent an hour or more reading the rules and all other verbose information about TPS. I then spent an additional one hour plus waiting in line in IRC to get an "interview", at which time I had to supply copious amounts of information regarding my existing tracker accounts, and answer questions based upon the TPS read-through. When the interviewer asked me about my feelings towards sharing invites, I replied that it is a good thing only if the other party can be proved responsible. The interviewer then "kicked" me out of the IRC chat with no explanation other than "denied"! I think that the correct answer was supposed to be "I never share Invites?, or only to my dearest friends?"....who knows...elitists and poppycock IMHO.

@ Final Theory - "If you are so great then get access to all those "good trackers" yourself. good luck"

People were getting invites to these "Good Trackers" long before TPS was around, & didn't have to kiss a bunch of ass to do it.

  16. Beagle // 6/13/2010 01:02:00 AM

@Frylock: It shouldn't be a big surprise to many, considering I was banned from there for telling the truth.

I'm surprised to see open signups, though. I guess the place is dying so they need something to try to revive it. Either that or donations are getting low.

  17. Beagle // 6/13/2010 01:35:00 AM

I see some guys are getting caught with dupe accounts already. lol

  18. blah // 6/13/2010 06:18:00 AM

If you've never used this site, don't bother. Such a shitty site that is supposedly all about the "community". No one gives a crap about your community, they want to be able to give out and receive invites w/o jumping through a hundred hoops.

On top of that they have the worst staff ever, I have luckily never been on the receiving end of the 10 year olds on a power trip that run the place. Time after time I have seen member after member banned for dumb ass thing after dumb ass thing.

Take your invites elsewhere as I have.

  19. Thevil // 6/13/2010 07:03:00 AM

This site sounds very legit, which I like. There's few places that actually have a good helpful community (which I do want). It seems to offer a lot of information and direction for newbies. I'm surprised there's so much haterade being spread around on here.

  20. Beagle // 6/13/2010 07:28:00 AM

It's not hatred, it's just that the place sucks now. It used to be a decent forum, but anyone with any amount of honesty and integrity has left, or been disabled or banned. All that's left now is a bunch of n00bs who will attempt to lecture you repeatedly about how to follow the rules. Most of the discussion there revolves around them telling you what their favorite "everything" is, what movie they watched last, what song they're listening to right now, etc, etc, etc. Anything resembling a serious topic that might affect BT is usually just ignored, and anything that is the least bit controversial is deleted and hidden from you.

If that's your idea of "community", or if you feel like being taught all about BT by a bunch of guys, some of which were former traders, the rest of whom were completely new to it themselves just a month or two ago, then go for it.

  25. Anonymous // 6/13/2010 11:40:00 AM

Hehe,it's just so obvious what kind of people/groups are behind these comments,,don't really care about them...all i wanted to say was about those comments about the staff, that was just so pathetically funny,i've been a member of almost all the major forums(invite/p2p forums) out there, and actually TPS's staff, despite my initial assumption, turned out to be the most easy going and nice ones out there, hell they even have a sub forum where you can talk and debate with them without any restrictions, and i haven't seen "anybody" being banned because of talking to them freely,as long as you respect them(and i mean respect as a person, not a mod) nothing happens, but of course there are always some people who will take it too far...

  26. Unknown // 6/13/2010 12:44:00 PM

  28. Beagle // 6/13/2010 09:54:00 PM

Ahhhh... now I get it. I just had a look at the Donation page....

One of the benefits of donating are..

-If you're an Initiate, you'll be promoted to New Recruit without passing the academy and keep the other benefits

So, for ten bucks anyone (traders, cheaters, sellers, previously banned members, etc, etc.) can now join without having to interview or provide any ratio proofs, etc. and they can have full access to the entire forum.

Combined with a system that rewards people for handing invites to anyone and everyone who asks, it should make for some interesting times at TPS :)

I wonder how many times the donation bar will hit 100% this month?

Take that tps dick out of your mouth for a while, and maybe you'll be able to see the truth.

  31. Unknown // 6/14/2010 09:47:00 PM

Not the best of times for TPS but then again no forum is perfect. I am a member of about a dozen invite/torrent community forums and I can easily say with full honesty that TPS is by far the best. Drama is just an unfortunate reality of the PT scene, nerds taking things too far. Still, I would recommend this site over any others out there. etiv doesn't even come close IMO. Beagle, miss the days that you were at TPS mate, doesn't seem the same without you.

  32. Unknown // 6/14/2010 10:30:00 PM

    Hey Beagle,

Just a short note to tell you how good we are doing since you were kicked out, little ex-god/dictator of TPS.

For all of you who weren't at TPS when Beagle was on his power trip, he was one major asshole, simple: he had ALL the powers, there was no way to discuss with this stupid fuck, all he was doing was giving infractions and banning members just for fun, and negative reps just for things like "not liking your avatar", "You're using X OS? I don't like it", etc...him and his fuck buddy Muddslinger, always kicking n00bs, insulting them etc...Real bullys.
And there was no way you could even talk with him, he just kept on ignoring everyone, exept if you were another staff or personal pal, and if you insisted...boom, another infraction...

Beagle and his Pals also wanted to close all invitation sections on TPS, they wanted this forum to be their own place to have fun, and as they already are member of all the good sites they said "fuck the n00bs, Fuck newbies, they need invites? We don't, let's close all invites section..."
Thats how it all began, other staff at TPS didn't forget that P2P is "sharing and caring" and not only an ego-trip for power tripping staff like beagle and several others, and didn't want TPS to become a staff/com rep/BT veterans forum, they wanted to welcome new users and help them go in the right way, and that's what happened, but as Beagle didn't want to let his little power toy in others hands they had to kick him out like a little brat, now TPS is better than ever !

Grow up, Beagle, move on, you're done being the small dictator that you were at TPS, now you're a useless little lonely guy with only his hatred left...

Actually, I feel sorry for you...

  33. Unknown // 6/14/2010 11:18:00 PM

Just wanted to add, we have much more active com reps than before, by active I mean really active, posting in forums and answering PMs, I'd say we have com reps for almost any tracker, some aren't that active but most from the important sites are.

And just ignore people like Beagle, he's just a sad little puppy whose toy was taken away from him...He's having a tantrum, and now he's trying to take his revenge...Sad...
The same about FryLock, one of Beagle's pal, another egoist fool who think only of himself...

  34. A13 // 6/14/2010 11:57:00 PM

    lol.

    Hey Midnight,

Um, who the f*** are you? Sorry for my crude language, the question greatly needed it. I'm amazed how you post as if you are some high end staff from that site itself and that you saw everything. Like you know what happened.

Ok, lol, power trip, major asshole, giving infractions, neg reps, and banning for fun, closing invites section, "other staff at TPS didn't forget that blah blah blah," kick Beagle out like a little brat because he had power to his head lmao I feel like clarifying that all, because unlike you I was a staffer (regretably) at that wretched place.

You say: Beagle was on a power trip, and there was no way to discuss with that stupid "fuck."
I say: He wouldn't have that perception (keyword is perception btw) of being all around TPS, if a lot of staff on TPS actually did shit. It's kind of sad when you have the likes of T3 who go onto that site every few days talking about his real life, then run off for months, or N3v3R who likes to come by every few weeks to talk about money and run off as well. In other words, you have a few staffers who don't do anything (or say anything), so he has to do all the shit himself. When you do a lot of shit on the site to cover for others, people do see you more. Is that where you came up with the perception? Btw, I'm not talking about all staffers of TPS. Some did do the work, and I won't discredit them for that. But the likes of T3 or N3v3R or Simpliztic or others, I give them a lol.
A few other tidbits too. Beagle never asked for the fucking positions, it was N3v3R And Soopy who granted them. And if you want to talk about powertripping and ego, you want to talk about Ravakk/Ninecat, who actually demanded the position because she felt that she needed to be a Sysop or she won't do shit. Or in other words, she wouldn't do things as a "push button lacky admin." (notice the quotes? It's actually from a log) Interestingly enough because she said some of that, apparently the dear Sysops said "ok how about sysop." (notice the quotes again?) And I think that's where some odd rumors about nude pics came about.... but that is just a guess.

  35. A13 // 6/14/2010 11:59:00 PM

You say: "he was doing was giving infractions and banning members just for fun, and negative reps just for things like "not liking your avatar", "You're using X OS? I don't like it", etc...him and his fuck buddy Muddslinger, always kicking n00bs, insulting them etc...Real bullys."
I say: There was some fun alright, fuck, I had fun too, when it came to banning the ones who didn't belong to TPS, like traders. And when it came to infractions, they come as a result of violating TPS rules. It's sad how some whine about it, but they don't want to realize why, so they complain that staff do it for fun. Sounds like you never followed them. Or you're just making up shit, which is just about all you did in your post.

You say: "now TPS is better than ever !"
I say: When you look at the active number of users a day, you'll be grossly wrong. Many members used to talk about the number 1337 because the active members a day usually hovered around that figure. But now, the number is only half of that. Figures....

I'll say though, most of you people will never take a stand for anything unless your own self is endangered. As bystanders you just sneer and laugh at those who are affected. It proves the type of selfish cowardice that so many of you have in this so called internet.

By the way, I'm glad to see that Savvyseed fucked TPS over. Instead of doing what's right back then, and along with Beagle and I question Savvyseed and all that money, the nice TPS head staff in their attempt to mask their little profiteering, decide to ban those who stood up and brought that issue out. Nice lol Back to asking for donations after just recently telling them they won't accept it anymore. Sounds like some strategic move because I've been telling the cursed staff to stop taking donations once Savvyseed already made so much money to cover the monthly costs. Ever wonder what happened with the money when Savvyseed kept making profits, but that donation bar kept going over 140-150% every month?

Now I feel like a loser for coming out here and posting all this. Oh well, might as well sink to the level of you lames.

@midnight: I can see you're just another one of the poor pathetic losers who hate what I have to say, but you can't actually refute any of it so you instead revert to an ad-hominem attack against my character. It's OK, anyone who knows me knows the truth and anyone who would believe any of what you wrote really isn't of any significance to me anyway.

The simple fact is that I tried to point out how TPS is now selling memberships and you don't like me doing that. My guess is that you're just N3V3R in disguise again, (remember Beagleshithimself?).

Just to prove my point about selling memberships, I signed up at TPS yesterday.

    http://i47.tinypic.com/2ypdpqw.jpg

As you can see I was able to just create an account with no questions asked. All I would have had to do to make it a full-fleged account, bypassing that lame Academy, would be to make a donation. ( and not using my old alias and making a post telling them about my dupe account would have helped too. lol)

    http://i48.tinypic.com/1zgc268.jpg

"If you're an Initiate, you'll be promoted to New Recruit without passing the academy and keep the other benefits."

Instead of taking the warning, or allowing any discussion, my post was quickly deleted, and the account was banned. The donation policy wasn't changed, though.

Any one of the previously banned members, any invite sellers, traders, cheaters, etc. could sign up just as I did, except using a different alias and not making a post telling about their dupe account of course, and become a member if they're willing to pay you money.

How sad TPS has become. You can try to portray me as some kind of evil dictator, but I can guarantee you that if I were still staff there is no chance in hell they would be selling memberships. I think the fact they'd implement something like that speaks volumes about the character of the current managment.

PS: If any of you previously banned members are considering doing what I've mentioned, don't forget to clear your cache and especially your cookies ;)

People don't care about TPS staff ex internal fights and why you 2 were banned, you were bad members trying to make this place your own playground and it failed, that's it, what counts is what TPS has become, a place that community reps trust and like to frequent regularly, where users and staff are friendly but firm with security, where traders and cheaters are not welcome and always caught and banned.

BTW Beagle, you're saying that security is compromised because people can buy their way in?
First, it's for a limited time, and these users can't access any invitation offering threads until they have proven to be good members and not only at TPS, they must give several of their trackers profile links to have full access to these forums.
So it's really easy to filter traders/cheaters and spot good BT members with these measures and they aren't the only ones, besides the interview of course, that's why you couldn't have kept your new dupe account B, even with a fake name and cleaned cookies and cache, you wouldn't have passed the interview and profile links, not a chance.

People who want to get in must be motivated good BT members, because if they aren't they won't get far...they will get caught and end up with a global ban.

But they are welcome to try, so when they are caught they can be weeded out of all good BT places :)

"I'm only speaking for myself and don't involve any TPS staff in my sayings" notice the quotes A13? It's from a log, LoL, quotes don't mean anything mate, just that you're full of sh*t, LoL.

  41. Unknown // 6/15/2010 11:48:00 AM

By motivated good BT members I mean people who won't harm trackers by cheating/trading etc... and use their trackers, not collecting them for fun, n00bs are all welcome, we were all new at one given time, we (experienced tracker users) are here to teach them what to do and what not to do, we aren't moralists, barely guides here to help you make the most of your BitTorrent experience and becoming respected tracker users.

  42. Beagle // 6/15/2010 11:57:00 AM

@midnight: still too much of a coward to post under your real nick, eh? Oh well, even if you are an anonymous coward, I'll respond to your mistakes anyway.

You say: "First, it's for a limited time, and these users can't access any invitation offering threads until they have proven to be good members and not only at TPS, they must give several of their trackers profile links to have full access to these forums."

Where does it state any of that? The donation page clearly states: "If you're an Initiate, you'll be promoted to New Recruit without passing the academy and keep the other benefits."

Although, that appears to have been changed now that they've been publicly exposed. Gee, was it something I said? LOL

You said: So it's really easy to filter traders/cheaters and spot good BT members with these measures and they aren't the only ones, besides the interview of course, that's why you couldn't have kept your new dupe account B, even with a fake name and cleaned cookies and cache, you wouldn't have passed the interview and profile links, not a chance.

So, you're that good at catching dupes now, eh? How is it that I've had an account there for so long, then? And no, I'm not talking about the one you banned after I mistakenly confided in an admin who I thought I trusted, I'm talking about the one that I still have.

You guys suck at catching traders and cheaters nowadays. I can browse through the list of active members and find at least half a dozen traders, and at least a couple of invite sellers.... and that's without having any access to the admin panel, or IPs. LOL, you guys have become nothing but a joke.

PS: Global ban. Hahaha... good one :)
Seriously, have a look around your various trackers and you'll see almost every one of the members you guys supposedly "global banned". It means nothing. I'm sorry to break the news to you, but you're not nearly as influential as you would like to believe.

PSS: What about that thread in the forum that claims that the donation bar was reset when it hit 300% after only 5 days? Is that actually true? So, you got 3 months worth of donations in 5 days, and rather than shut down donations, you reset the donation bar? Then you decided to start selling memberships? WTF is going on there nowadays?

Hmm, 404 dns error. Think Beagle made them shut down.

Lol, the site can be accessed here http://212.117.173.175/ sorry for the temporary inconvenience.

Yeah I did realize that most don't give a shit :) That is what I did mention explicitly in my post ;)

I still have a big hunch that you are involved though, because if not, then what you've been saying about catching traders and cheaters, and banning them all, and then talking about dupe accounts on TPS, interviews and all that shit, is my pal, all bull. How would you supposedly know of these things if you aren't staff? lol But hey that's just a guess.

Your comments are highly amusing. I'm not desperate enough to force the majority of the dumbasses over at TPS to know what little muppets they are. The ones who want to know, reached out, and knew. The rest, lol. Ignorance is bliss so they say.

And honestly, talking about TPS security, you sound like a noob lol the amount of dumbassness in your statements is beautiful. I feel almost insulted if I were to respond to your naive views and the ability of you and your staff to weed out bad eggs lol

I have to say TPS does a good job of using other people's ideas and capitalize it to profit though. It's a dirty, but sound business model I will admit.

And yes, call me a hater, a loser, and an outcast. I actually like this feeling of both hilarity and bitterness. I wasted too much time doing things for that site, but now when I look at how much it's degraded from the outside, I can't help but feel happy. There just has to be a reason why there are so many issues with the site. lol

    :/

  47. Unknown // 6/18/2010 11:03:00 PM

I joined TPS, after going through the most lengthy interview ever. Wanted to know every single tracker I was a member of, my ratio proofs and profile links at each of them, and woe to me if i didnt disclose every single one of them.
After all that, I got banned because i forgot that i was a member of more than one torrent invite site, since i didnt mention one that i had not been active in for quite a while since i joined it. Therefore since i had mentioned in a forum that i had joined more than one on that day, and forgott to mention it, i was banned on the grounds that, if i lied about this, they were afraid i could be lying about anything else.and implying that i could be some sort of law enforcement official out to get them.

well im not going to post my opinions about all that, but just adding the facts of my case to this interesting discussion.

Its all just a bit much. and way too dramatic!.

Seems more and more junkies enjoy tease and poke on people while they're on their power trip

    @No
No, man, you should answer it that you only agree with invitations only if all skuller'n'jerkkofs pas the same ass licking cock sucking procedure as you. And only masta can invite other pawns to share his juice.

I always disagree with this kind of idiotisim when some kid like to pretend to be a divine.

TPS site and some of its members are under investigation for recent donations they accepted and for illegal activities someone submitted complaints to a regulator who will act soon and take appropriate action to close that site

lmao.. don't you just love it when someone tries to string together a bunch of big words in a lame attempt to sound smart :)

    http://i45.tinypic.com/2czotxd.jpg

Allow me to make a couple of corrections...

Where you said: "TPS has always owned the .com and .org versions of the domain. We have the .net as a mirror...

What you actually should have said was: "N3v3R has always owned the .com and .org versions of the domain from the time TPS was formed. I, NiNeCaT, own the .net version for untold reasons."

When you say: "we are merging two different database technologies that will not share the same server cluster"...

What do you mean by that? There is no current "cluster". TPS is hosted on one dedicated server rented from server.lu. Don't you actually mean that the .net will be hosted on a different server? If so, that's no big surprise, now is it?? ;)

Also, if the new domain was only intended as a "mirror", could you please explain the channel topic from the IRC channel...

We registered a new domain, use https://212.117.173.175/home.php to view the forums while the registration completes.

No mention of a "mirror" there. It seems pretty clear to me. There was a plan to switch domains to take over the site, but those plans changed and everything reverted back to the .org domain after it was uncovered and reported in a public blog. The news post is full of bullshit, and nothing more than a lame attempt to cover ass.

You say: "Constantly changing code for innovations leaves opportunities for mistakes and sometimes downtime"....

Finally something truthful, LOL. When the server went down in the exact same fashion and for a similar duration, not long after I was banned, the story you guys fabricated at that time was that I had somehow sabotaged the server. It's nice to see you guys finally owning up to your own ineptitude :)

Last, but not least, if there is no validity to these "elaborate exercises in imagination", then why would someone be banned for this simple comment...

    "FryLock // 6/12/2010 08:10:00 PM

    This concept is strangely familiar...."

    Can anybody say CGi-U? HA!

First off: The Pirate Society is DEAD, patrick muufuckin swayze DEAD! This little "Pirate academy" is a feeble remake of a site that deserved alot more from the community than it was given. Beagle, Frylock, you two are the ones that killed CGi-U, but it doesnt matter. TPS WILL be gone soon, so i am not gonna lose any sleep :)

oh and BTW.... Etiv is 1000x better as a community than TPS ever was or could ever be. The staff arent "elevated" above all, and the members feel at home there.

  53. USMLEMATERIAL // 9/04/2010 09:41:00 PM

Etiv FTW..... I'm not a etiv staff or TPS anti too, but comparing both my experiences,TPS sucks, esp its staff, they are bunch of assholes, they ban users for sharing more invites lol lmfao, wat kinda forum is that ? and it took like 10 times for me to go to their irc to know why i was banned lol,I'm not a trader, cheater or liar, they just kicked off me for sharing more invites,I think they wanted noobs to stay as noobies 4ever !

  54. Beagle // 9/05/2010 11:59:00 AM

@super: Neither I, nor Frylock, killed CGI-U. The actions of it's owner killed it.
