A general/0day torrent tracker that’s 5 years old? If a private BitTorrent site managed to stay online for that long, there should definitely be something good about it. Swepiracy is indeed a decent general tracker – and it’s now probably the largest private torrent community based in Sweden. From its humble beginnings back in 2006, this site has today evolved into a well established tracker with a solid user base. It indexes scene releases at good pre times and offers very good download speeds on majority of indexed torrents. Pretty much everything gets uploaded here including movies, music, games, TV shows, HD content, books and more (including both English and Swedish DVDR and BD25/BD50 uploads). Apart from content, SwePiracy is also known for its Doodles page showcasing interesting logos used on site since 2006 (similar to Google). Signups are currently open and interested readers are welcome to check it out.

Swepiracy

Although Swepiracy celebrates its 5th birthday today with much pride , the journey so far hasn’t been an easy one of the site. Actually, SF was temporarily shut down back in 2009, along with a number of other Swedish torrent trackers fearing legal issues - this was after the infamous Pirate Bay verdict. The site later returned much to the joy of its loyal fan base and has been up and running ever since. As of 30/4/2011, it currently tracks around 14000 active torrents and has a registered users base of 24000+ members.

As mentioned earlier, SwePiracy is primarily a scene releases tracker. In addition to the usual major scene leaks, it tracks a ton of DVDR (and now even BD25/BD50) torrents including some very nice packs. Uploads include releases pre’d by groups native to the Nordic region – this means you will find some DVDR/Blu Ray releases for DVD region 2 (R2). The screenshot below captures several packs found on SwePiracy:

Swepiracy Packs

Registrations for SP are now open (in fact, they’ve been open for quite some time now). The max user cap is currently placed at 30k, meaning there is still room for 6000 more new members provided signups don’t close early. If you are looking for a decent scene tracker check this out.

Given the bad luck surrounding scene MP3 torrent trackers lately, we never though this one would make a comeback. However, we’ve been proven wrong and MP3Scene is back online after an extended downtime. As our regular readers would already know, MP3S is a scene music torrent tracker based on SoftMP3 source. Launched back in January 2011, this site got off to a blazing start with over 5000 registered users and 10000+ active torrents indexed after a short period of time. However, its progress was hampered by the downtime, which lasted for several weeks. Good news is that MP3Scene is now back online and appears to be fully functional. Those of you who were members would be glad to know that no data has been lost during the downtime – old user accounts and torrents are still there (you might need to do a password reset to get an old account working). For potential new members, MP3Scene is currently open for signup and is accepting new registrants.

MP3Scene

As for the cause of the downtime, there is no official word on site from the administrators (other than a welcome back message and a note saying the site is open for sign up along with free leech). According to a Tweet from http://twitter.com/mp3scene, MP3Scene went offline due to a miscommunication with the hosting provider.

For those of you hearing about MP3Scene for the first time, it’s a music torrent tracker specializing in scene released MP3 music albums. The site indexes hundreds of new daily torrents at decent pre times and with good download speeds as well. For a detailed ovewview of this site along with screenshots, we recommend you read this article. In the meantime, signups are currently open and new members can create a free account using the links below.

It’s no secret that General/0Day torrent trackers are currently the most common type of private BitTorrent communities around. Although we see sites catering to general content launch every month, most of them fail to make an impression and usually go offline after a couple of weeks. In this context, AlphaOmega can be considered as one of the rare successful general trackers to hit the BitTorrent scene recently. This ratio free, gazelle powered site has been making improvements to site features, recruiting members and of course, expanding their torrent index. Just 6 months into the launch and AO now has a strong user base of 12000+ registered users and tracks over 18000 active torrents. A host of new features including personalized RSS feeds, bonus points store, new spam torrents section were announced just a couple of days ago. For those interested in joining, signups are now open.

AlphaOmega

As we revealed In a previous article, AlphaOmega has been continuously adding new site features since their launch. If going ratio free and building partnership with a P2P uploader team was not enough, here are details of some of the most recent changes introduced at AO :

The AlphaOmega Store
If you had not already noticed we now have the Store tab (sorry it took so long), which you can click and it will take you to the Store. From here you are able to do a few things. (more will be added at a later date)

  • Buy Additional Invites (Once brought your invite count will be increased by 1)
  • Buy Upload GB's (Useful to get to the next rank. Each unit is 1GB, so if you buy 20, its 20GB!)
  • Custom Title
  • Transfer Points (Transfer selected amount of your points from you to a friend)

Additionally, you are able to see what is available from the IRC, to do this you can type !store and a list like this will appear.
Personal RSS Feed
Finally after months of work, the Persoanal RSS Feed now works, this can be used with uTrorrent & ruTorrent (i think it works with Deluge and Transmission too). If you know how to use RSS then it is pretty self explanitory, but if you are having trouble with it please do not hesitate to come into our IRC to the help channel #Atlas and speak to one of our friendly Staff. Otherwise check out the Forums for some answers.
New ANiME Section
After months and months of members begging for an Anime section we have implemented it. Just look at the Cats on the main Browse Page and you will see it there. It seems to have only been up for a day and well there are load of torrents already filling it up, so it looks like it was a good addition to the site. Please if you do encounter any issues with this new Section do not hesitate to contact one of our friendly Staff so they can assists you.
New MP3/Spam Tab
Right, we have implemented a new TAB which takes you to a whole new section of the Site. This is the MP3/Spam TAB. If you are looking for your daily fix of APPS, E-Books, MP3's & Misc then you will be able to find it all in here. This will not be announced in the Main channel on IRC but it will still be announced in the #AO.Announce channel.

As of 28/4/2011, AlphaOmega tracked over 18200 torrents and had a user base of 14000+ registered members. Bulk of these torrents are scene releases, some uploaded by the sites autouploader – these torrents usually have decent download speeds and are uploaded at acceptable pre times. The torrent count included over 350 packs along with some exclusive encodes by AOs’ internal/affiliated encoder teams.

AO Packs

Registrations for AlphaOmega are currently open. All new users are rewarded with 50GB of free upload credits and 2 free invites at startup. If you are looking to be part of a fast growing, young general tracker, check this out.

In this day and age, it’s a relatively easy task to start a BitTorrent tracker. Making the launch a success and keeping the tracker online without it letting it fall apart after a couple of weeks is the hard part. There are quite a few challenges to overcome including recruiting good staff, recruiting members, adding new torrents and of course, meeting donation goals. These become even more challenging if you are a niche site catering to a limited segment of the BT community. ScienceHD (SHD) is one tracker that can boast about pulling this off – despite being a specialized tracker serving a select segment in BitTorrent scene (science fiction TV shows, documentaries & infotainment content) , SHD has now successfully been online for more than two years. They are celebrating the second birthday in grand style and by the looks of it, have plans to continue for many more years to come.

ScienceHD

SHD celebrated its second birthday on 22nd of April, which was also the Earth day. A new post on site stated:

Today is the annual Earth Day celebration, Earth Day is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's natural environment through education, public policy, and consumer campaigns. http://www.earthday.org/ Today also happens to be the day a small niche tracker was born. That tracker was called ScienceHD. The idea: for a small but dedicated group of people to come together in a clean, friendly, easy to use environment to share documentaries and other common interests. A place for good quality uploads and good quality conversation. We just about managed it So its Happy Birthday to us! We have had our ups and downs but at a time where trackers come and go every five minutes, two years on we are still here.

SHD birthday promotions have quite a few highlights, including free invites to all existing members along with the removal of the minimum download requirement. There are several ongoing competitions through which you can win free bonus credits and global free leech has been activated until midnight today (24th). More details on thee below:

Forum Activity Weekend - All this weekend (22nd-24th) we will be awarding 1000 credits for every forum post you make. In addition all new threads you start will gain a whopping 5000 credits. Also there will be several mini competitions all through the weekend, and an IRC scavenger hunt at around 17:00 GMT on Sunday. Keep checking the forums for more details. Invites for all - As a birthday gift, everyone will have received at least two invites so you can invite friends and family. But the catch. You only have a limited time to use them. These timed invites will expire in 14 days so if you don't use them before then you will lose them, so please keep that in mind. Global Freeleech - We are going sidewide Freeleech starting now until midnight Sunday 24th (GMT). So get downloading all those things you've had bookmarked for ages but never got around to grabbing. Site Rule Changes - We are removing the minimum 3GB download requirement (which we haven't really enforced for a while anyway). But we are a community and still expect all members to be active in one way or another. Be it downloading, uploading or just posting in the forum, some form of activity is required each month, otherwise your account will be at risk. Logging in will not be considered actively using the account; you've still got to do something with it. New Staff Members - We are pleased to announce three new members of the Staff team. K73SK and Ingall join us as new Moderators, and Fuzzypants is our new Torrent Mod. They are here to help and are giving up some of their free time so please treat them with respect.

For those of you who are hearing about SHD for the first time, it’s a gazelle based tracker that specializes in Science Fiction TV shows and documentaries. To know additional information about this site including features, screenshots, category details, rules, etc please refer to our previous reviews located here and here. If you are not yet a member, online invite applications are open and you can apply for an invite using the links below:

Site Name: ScienceHD (http://sciencehd.me)

Statistics: ~1875 users and ~7200 torrents which covers episodes/documentaries from 1900+ series

Good news if you love reading (or ‘hearing’) books. My Anonamouse, easily one of the best private torrent trackers out there for E-books and AudioBooks, is conducting a special round of interviews to recruit some FILEnetworks readers into their ranks. There is no need to panic after hearing the word ‘interview’ – you don’t need to be a l33t torrenter or power user of BitTorrent to become a member. Interviews are pretty easy and MyAN has some of the friendliest and most helpful staff in the BT community. With a massive torrent index spanning over 60000 files, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say this is one of the largest online repositories of electronic books and audio books. Not only does MyAN track content optimized for the PC, but you’ll find lots of stuff targeted at mobile platforms such as Amazon Kindle, Android and Apple iOS here too.

My Anonamouse Index

Although My Anonamouse has had open signups from time to time, their preferred mode of recruitment has always been IRC interviews. However, being a closed community hasn’t hampered their growth at all – the site currently has over 42000 registered members, which is massive by private tracker standards. Speaking of size, MyAN does have a pretty large torrent index kept alive by this huge user base. As of 23/4/2011 it tracked over 60000 torrents, up from 32000 since July 2010 (last count was when we covered a MyAN open signup). That’s 30000 new torrents added in around 10 months Impressive stuff.

The content on My Anonamouse is what makes it such a valuable tracker. It currently indexes around 18000 audiobook torrents, 17000 EBook torrents (the actual number of books indexed is much higher because some of these torrents are packs) and another 9000 musicology torrents. There are books related to a number of different genres ranging from fiction, non fiction to crime novels and critically acclaimed bestsellers. Alongside audiobooks and electronic books MyAN tracks graphic novels, comics, magazines, newspapers, educational material as well as music related stuff such as guitar/bass tabs, sheet music, lick libraries and even concert videos. As mentioned earlier, you will find content for your mobile devices as well, not just for the PC.

My Anonamouse Index

Despite having a ton of torrents and high popularity, My Anoanamouse is not known as an elite tracker nor as one with arrogant staff. Their interview process is designed to help even the newest users of BitTorrent (aka noobs). To quote the words of Lazy Mouse (SysOp) from a previous article:

The invite questions we ask is to first off all educate people about how a private site works if they are totally new to it, it not, they know the ropes and will answer the questions just fine. It's not a matter of getting them right or wrong, it's about learning and trying their best :D With this system less people end up with a bad ratio, since they know what we expect of them and what they can do from the start to not end up with a warning or getting download disabled after 4-7 days.

Coming back to special IRC interviews, FILEnetworks readers now stand a chance to sign up and start using their My Anoanamouse account with a few hundred bonus points pre loaded:

Please let your readers know that between Saturday 23rd April - Saturday 21st May, they will be able to register with MyAnonamouse.net at the following page:
http://www.myanonamouse.net/inviteapp.php
Once they have accessed our IRC they can identify themselves as coming from filenetworks by typing FWS - which means Friendliness, Warmth, Sharing (our site motto) - to receive a special invite that includes bonus points following a successful interview.

Step by step instructions on how you can get a free MyAnonamouse invite are given below:

  1. Visit the MyAnonamouse invite application located at http://www.myanonamouse.net/inviteapp.php. This page will give you a basic idea of what the site is about and the questions you’ll be asked in the interview.
  2. Join the MyAN IRC channel using http://www.myanonamouse.net/chat.php (if you are new to IRC, having trouble connecting or if you are trying to connect using an IRC client such as mIRC, detailed instructions can be found on this page)
  3. Once logged onto the IRC channel. Type FWS and press enter (this is to identify that you came through the FILEnetworks article). Wait patiently and you will  be contacted by an MyAN interview team member – follow the instructions and you should get in just fine.

Good Luck!

Special thanks to My Anonamouse staff for the offer.

In modern day and age, the moment you hear the words ‘music torrent tracker’, you automatically attribute them with illegal downloads which infringe copyright. While most of the torrent sites out there do enable sharing of copyrighted material, the BitTorrent technology can be put to legal uses as well. Panda.CD is a new private torrent tracker that demonstrates a legit use of BitTorrent – not only does the site encourage uploading legal music, but it also has a model where users can directly donate to artists as an appreciation of their work. Just like a regular music tracker, Panda.CD indexes MP3 and FLAC tracks of music related to a number of different genres. However, these files are either uploaded by artists themselves or are licensed under sharing friendly schemes such as Creative Commons. If you are interested in joining this unique tracker, signups are currently open.

Panda.CD

Panda is a brand new torrent site and has only been online for a couple of days. It currently tracks around 160 torrents and has ~200 registered members. As mentioned earlier, PCD encourages artists to share their original music to be distributed over BitTorrent. The site has a unique ‘artist donations’ feature through which users can directly donate to artists as a reward for their efforts. More on how this feature works is quoted below:

Whenever you upload a torrent if you are the artist in question or you are an official representative, you have the option to enter your PayPal details and an (optional) donation target (which is total sum on donations that you would like to achieve). This will appear on the details page of the torrent, allowing other site members to donate directly to you for your torrents if they so wish.
Once a donation target has been reached on a torrent it will thereby be made freeleech for 1 week. Setting your donation info on your ‘edit’ page will also add a PayPal button to your profile. If you are the artist responsible for any of the torrents already uploaded here by another member please contact us to claim ownership and enable artist donations.
But of course, non-artist members can still upload freely available music. So don’t let that stop you.
We envision the site as being one where artists can come together to share their work, while members directly support the creation of new music.

Making an artist donation for a torrent you like is pretty easy – just click on the green star that appears next to the torrent name on main index.

Panda.CD Index

So, can only artists upload torrents to Panda.CD? Are only legal uploads allowed here? We contacted the site’s owner for further clarification:

Yeah only legal uploads are allowed. Any music can be uploaded as long as the licence permits it. So while this means that the site is more geared towards bands/artists releasing their own music, members could still potentially make their own rips of music that allows sharing (eg. existing creative commons music). Only the artist themselves, or an official representative may receive artist donations for a torrent.

It may be a new site but the concept behind Panda.CD is very interesting. If this kicks off, it could put to rest a lot of “BitTorrent is evil” myths out there. For those interested in joiing, signups are currently open.

Special thanks to Dave (PCD Owner) for the heads up.

The past couple of months haven’t been particularly good ones for scene mp3 torrent trackers. We saw the demise of one of the largest torrent sites catering to this niche, VIPMusic, much to the disappointment of its loyal fan base. This was soon followed by extended downtime at MP3Scene, a private MP3 tracker that showed a lot of promise as a potential replacement to SceneSound. If you are a fan of scene released music albums, here’s some good news for a change; TuneSound is a brand new torrent site that aims to fill the gap left behind by the likes of VIPMusic, SceneSound and MP3Scene. It another site that’s based on the SoftMP3 source code. While TS has got off to a great start so far, it remains to be seen if this tracker can break the curse which seem to affect the SoftMP3 clones that launched in recent times. If you are interested in joining, signups are currently open.

TuneSound

Although it’s only been online for several days, TuneSound is off to a flying start. The site has already amassed over 550 torrents and managed to recruit 575+ members. These statistics are only poised to go up as news of the tracker spreads around the BitTorrent community. TS seems to have Swedish origins but thankfully for non Swedish members, the interface language supports 6 additional languages including English.

As we mentioned earlier, TuneSound is built on the same source as SoftMP3. It basically has the same look and feel of SoftMP3 and retains hallmark features such as the unique start page, separate browse pages each for new releases, archived releases, requests and lossless music, along with a few customizations here and there. As for the content, TS is a torrent tracker specializing in scene released MP3 music albums. Indexed music is organized into 40+ different genres including Rock, Pop, Indie, Punk, Jazz and more. In addition to MP3 files which form the majority of  torrent index, this site tracks some MDVDR and Lossless music files as well.

TuneSound Index

Registrations for TuneSound are currently open. Although there is no max user limit set currently, TS is expected to go invite only after the initial open registration period which may only last 1-2 weeks. If you love scene music, feel free to check this site out.

A couple of days ago we featured on this blog theRenamer, a great software the could rename downloaded movie and TV show video files by automatically inserting episode names, titles, etc to the file name. While the software did an excellent job on renaming video files, it did not rename any associated subtitle files. As you might know, most computer applications, built in media players on DVD, Blu-Ray players & modern TVs require subtitle file names to match those of video file names for subtitles streams to display properly. When file names are mismatched, you will be left with the painstaking task of renaming each file manually, which can take quite some time if you are dealing with something like a TV show with multiple seasons. SubDude is a useful little utility that can automate this rename process and save you a lot of time.

SubDude

To clear any confusion, SubDude does not only work with video files renamed using theRenamer. You can use it to automatically rename even downloaded subtitles. Following table shows how SubDude will rename the subtitle file of a single TV episode:

  Before SubDude After SubDude
Video Filename The.Sopranos.s03e01.avi The.Sopranos.s03e01.avi
Subtitle Filename The-Sopranos3x1.srt The.Sopranos.s03e01.srt

How this software works is pretty simple. It matches the season and episode numbers in video and subtitle files using regular expressions (RegEx) and renames the matches accordingly. Below are some instructions on how to use the app, in case you didn’t figure it out already":

  1. Move all your subtitle files and video files inside a single directory (see notes below for additional details).
  2. Launch SubDude. In the ‘Rename’ tab, browse and point to the directory with files you created in Step 1.
  3. If you want to later undo the rename actions, check ‘Create and unDude file’ checkbox.
  4. Press Go.

Important Notes (Quoted from developer page):

  • SubDude assumes that every files in the folder are from the same show and checks season and episode numbers only.
  • Subdude uses regular expressions to detect season and episode numbers. Most common patterns (TVShow-s04e01, TVShow-4x1 etc) are handled, however Subdude will eventually fail to detect season and episode numbers on certain files (TVShow401 etc). This problem is being worked on.

UPDATED (17/4): Article updated with The DVD Club, TorrentHR (Ratio Free) and Wunza (Ratio Free) Open Signups. See end of post for signup links.
Welcome to another one of our private torrent tracker open signup updates. The last collective tracker update was done back in February and between now and then, we’ve discussed about dozens of new and old BitTorrent sites on this blog. This article presents a summarized list of 16 notable private torrent communities currently accepting new registrations (14 sites which are directly open for signup plus two more giving away invites on IRC). As usual, a lot of focus is given to specialized trackers focusing on specific niches, as opposed to General/0Day trackers than are commonplace nowadays. This post features sites dedicated to movies, graphics, cartoons, kids content, sports, TV shows, music, HD content, etc. As usual, updated site statistics, signup URLs and links to a full tracker review is included with each entry.

It’s recommended that you read the full review before signing up for a tracker – this will give you a better idea on what sort of content you can find on a site and help you decide whether you really need to become a member of it or not. Readers familiar with our movie release date updates would need no further introduction as to what PeerAccess (PA) is. It’s one of the most up to date sources on the internet for latest home movie release dates on R1, R2, R5 DVD and Blu Ray disks. While this fact about the forum seems to be quite well known, most people don’t appear to be aware that PA is also a file sharing forum with BitTorrent news, tracker discussions, open signup updates, seedbox reviews and of course, invite giveaways and requests. It is also the official home of TOXiC, a P2P release group specializing in movies. PA recently went through an ownership change and has been closed for registration for over 4 months. However the site has re-opened its doors to the public with a new look, new content and as usual, more updated DVD/Bluray release dates.

PeerAccess Logo

Although its only about a year and a half old, PeerAccess has gone through quite a few changes during this time, some of them involving changes to site administration. PA recently re-launched under a new ownership along with a new look and feel. Their BitTorrent section seem to have received a boost after the reboot but thankfully, the sites main highlight, the release date threads, remain as up-to date as ever.

Speaking of the release dates section, PA maintains up to date lists of official DVD and Blu Ray release dates of upcoming movies. Scheduled dates for DVD regions 1, 2, and 5 (R1, R2, R5) are well organized and listed in separate forum sections. Wondering how knowing a release date in advance can help you? Well, one can pretty much guess *when* a particular movie will leak online if you know its public DVD/BluRay release date. These schedules are subject to frequent change due to last minute decisions by publishers. This is one reason why most R5/R1/R2 predictions on the web soon become out of date. However, PA is one of the rare forums which regularly update its threads to reflect new schedules (which is qhy we quote them in our R5 release updates such as this). A screenshot of the release dates section can be found below:

PeerAccess Release Dates

PeerAccess is not a brand new forum and has been online for over a year. The site has so far managed to recruit around 600 members who’ve created over 1300 thrads (these statistics are after a database reset happened several months ago). It may not be the most active forum out there but the growth has been healthy. If you still haven’t got in, registrations have been opened after 4 months.

For anyone obsessed with full DVD, Blu-Ray movie or TV torrents, BitHQ is a must have tracker. It’s a private torrent site specializing in untouched content (no rips – only indexes full disk releases with no modifications) and is one of the largest trackers catering to this niche along with TDC and Sparvar. During its 3+ years of lifetime, BitHQ has for the most part been an invite only community. However, during the past couple of months the site appeared to be having random open signups from time to time, although there was no official acknowledgement about this either on site or on forums. Judging from the feedback we received, some readers were able to sign up while others were greeted by an invalid invite code message. Good news is that BitHQ is now officially open for signup – a new item posted on site homepage mentions that the site will be open to the public until further notice.

BitHQ Tracker

If memory serves correct, BitHQ began its operations back in 2008. Like all new torrent sites, it started small but soon built a following of several hundred active members and some decent uploaders who propelled the tracker forward. Today in 2011, BitHQ has grown steadily to become one of the largest untouched DVD/Blu Ray trackers in existence, with over 7500 registered users and 12000+ indexed torrents.

Initially, BitHQ was limited to tracking mostly untouched DVD 5 and DVD 9 torrents only. Even today majority of the sites torrents are DVD releases but they have caught up with the times and moved into the Blu Ray release scene as well. BitHQ now tracks over 800 full BD25 and BD50 uploads along with thousands of other 720p/1080p high definition video and DVDR releases. As for the content, pretty much everything including full TV series, English movies, foreign movies, classic TV series and some sports content can be found here. All of these come with extra features, full menus, bonus features and other goodies found in the originals. Some of the largest torrents indexed on BitHQ can be seen on the screenshot below:

Coming back to open signups, quoted below is the official acknowledgement posted on BitHQ’s homepage:

Open Sign-Ups
We have gone into a period of open sign-ups. If you know somebody who you would like to be a member, or they would like to be a member, let them know that they can sign up right now!
We will inform you when we go back to invites only.

To put it short, this is a great site to have if you like downloading untouched DVDR and Blu Rays. Get in while you still can.

Pretty much all of us download TV shows and movies from the internet (let it be from file sharing sites such as BitTorrent trackers, direct download link forums or even by a legitimate means) and store them on our desktops, laptops, portable hard drives or media player PCs. However, most of the downloaded files have different kinds of naming conventions – for example, some shows have merely the season and episode numbers while some others carry episode name as well. What if you want to rename all your media files to a standard you like? Manually doing this for each file would be a tedious task (think about a show with several seasons). The is where theRenamer comes in. It’s an excellent utility that helps you automatically rename your media files. And it’s not just a batch rename tool either; give theRenamer a file (or a set of files) which just has the episode and season number and the app will automatically fetch the episode name online and rename the file accordingly.

TheRenamer Logo

You can fully customize the way your video files are renamed. Under default settings, theRenamer will strip off release group name and video quality details in file and add the episode name if its missing. theRenamer is able to fetch media information from four different online sources; IMDB, TV.com, TheTVDB and EPGuides.com. Below are some examples of renamed files (using default settings, without changing anything in the app after a fresh install):

Original Auto Renamed
The.Simpsons.S22E01.720p.HDTV.X264-DIMENSION The Simpsons.S22E01.Elementary School Musical
The.Big.Bang.Theory.S04E19.PROPER. HDTV.XviD-LD The Big Bang Theory.S04E19.The Zarnecki Incursion
frasier.622-med Frasier.S06E22.Visions of Daphne

Usage of theRenamer is very simple. To rename a file, all you have to do is the drag and drop and the app will do the rest. If you are dealing with multiple files, simply select all and drag them in – this tool is able to perform batch operations and will reformat all your file names in a couple of seconds.

TheRenamer Screenshot

A full list of theRenamer features can be found below (quoted from official site page):

  • A user interface that's idiot proof - using Drag & Drop.
  • Fuzzy Logic sorts out the Show name, Season/Episode numbers (S1E1, 1x1 or 101 formats).
  • Queries the most advanced search engine – Google
  • Automatically grabs the official show name and episode titles from the most comprehensive movie database on the web - IMDb.com, TV.com, theTVDB.com and EPGUIDES.com.
  • Database: Simple and automatic table for keeping track of TV website's ID number.
  • Force show names: Lets you customize how the Show Name is named (if you prefer shorter names).
  • Fetch Folder: Scans all files in that directory. Point it to your 'Download Complete' folder. For people who are
too lazy to Drag & Drop.....I love it :)
  • Auto Move: Automatically moves files to your TV Show Archive after it's renamed.
  • Fully automate the entire rename and move process with parameter (theRenamer.exe -fetch and -fetchmovie)
  • MOVIES! theRenamer now supports Movie files as well.
  • Auto creates IMDb shortcut link to IMDb movie webpage.

Despite being an excellent utility, like all software out there this is not a perfect application. I got an “EPISODE TITLE MISSING” error for some files I tried to rename – this bug is apparently fixed now but I still got the error in the latest build (v7.5). Either way it’s just a minor annoyance and the fact remains this is a highly useful tool for anyone who downloads shows and movies online.

Some of our long time readers would no doubt remember the name PureTorrents. Back in the day, PT was known as an academic E-book torrent tracker – the site soon became a hit as it filled a void in the BitTorrent scene, tracking many text books and educational books not usually found on other sites. It was even seen as a potential replacement for the legendary textbook torrents tracker (now defunct). Although PT grew rapidly and expanded their torrent index beyond 10000 files, things took a downward turn when it suddenly went offline. Good news is that after being down for several months, PT has now returned. However, it’s no longer an specialized E-book tracker. Although fans of the old site would have liked it to remain a niche tracker, resurrected version of PT is a General/0Day torrent site. The new PureTorrents comes with zero advertisements and the ability to direct download select files.

PureTorrents Logo

As we mentioned earlier, PureTorrents filled a vacuum in the torrenting community when it started back in 2009. It was then viewed as a tracker with some pretty unique content, namely academic E-books. The resurrected version however seems to be the complete opposite of the original, at least in terms of commodity of available content. Being a General/0Day torrent tracker, PureTorrents now tracks the usual scene and P2P releases which you can find on almost every other similar site. Not only that, most of the torrents now seem to be tracked by public trackers - you don’t even need to register to download these torrents.

PureTorrents Direct Download

Although many would see the switch from a niche site to a general tracker as a bad move, there are a few positives involved as well. First and foremost is the direct downloads feature. A select few files (mostly movie re-encodes by internal group PURE RG) can be downloaded directly over regular HTTP instead of torrents. Look for the ‘Direct Download’ button above torrent download link to use this feature. For now, the direct downloads service remains free and open to all. Additionally, PureTorrents is 100% ad free and is supported only by donations.
