PackMe.In – Here To Stay?

When PackMe.In (aka The Donkey) launched back in July 2009, it quickly established itself as the BitTorrent community’s first and only packs tracker. Yes, the site specialized in torrent packs (a single torrent containing multiple related items such as a movie or book series) which were usually indexed on large General trackers as ‘value added’ content. But that wasn’t all – PiN had a well designed user interface, was ratio free and had a very active IRC community even during its early stages. While the start was definitely good, PiN has been struggling to stay afloat during the last couple of months. Earlier, it had trouble with its BitTorrent tracker continuously crashing – this caused the site to be rebuilt from scratch and all user accounts and torrents were lost in the process. Needless to say this was a massive blow and caused a drop in site activity. PiN was on verge of a permanent shut down about a week ago but now it seems that staff have managed to sort out most of the problems and have decided to keep the site going, now hosted on a brand new server.

PackMe.In

It was only a week ago PiN staff posted an official notice announcing the site and tracker would soon be shut down. The reason for this was inadequate activity:

So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish
We tried, but it seems that we simply can't generate the necessary activity to sustain the site. We simply do not have the resources any longer to keep it going, so if at the end of the month we do not have enough money to pay for the main server, we will be forced to close the site. In that case, any donations received this month (so far we've gotten one) will be refunded.
Don't Panic!

However, fans of PackMe.In would be delighted to hear that most of the problems associated with the site have now been resolved. Quoted below is a news item posted yesterday:

We're Saved!
If you're reading this you've successfully logged in to our new server! We've switched the site to a more affordable home (by paying a year at once, so if you have any change to spare now is the time to cough up) and we're more stable than ever! It looks as though we'll be here a good long time after all. As a result, we've redoubled our efforts to improve the site (we've fixed a promotion bug a few people have been experiencing), and we're working on new and exciting installments. Please bear with us.
Thanks for sticking around!
Also, signups are still open for anyone wishing to register. Tell your friends!

PackMe.In currently tracks over 350 packs and more are being added every day. The registered users base has exceeded the 6000 mark and this is expected to increase further with the current open signups. If you haven't visited PiN in a while or had given up on it due to inactivity, now would be a good time to revisit BitTorrent’s one and only packs tracker (and don’t forget to check out the new ‘Grunge’ skin).
