EA are giving away Red Alert 1 for free since the 31st of August. According to a post on Ea.com, this offer is given to celebrate the 13th anniversary of the franchise:

Today, August 31st, 2008 marks the 13th anniversary of the storied Command & Conquer franchise, which has sold over 25 million copies to date. And to celebrate this milestone and this October's highly anticipated return to the world of Red Alert with Red Alert 3, we are giving away one of the original games that started it all, Command & Conquer Red Alert, for FREE.

Red Alert 1, although it may look dated by today's standards, was one of the first and best RTS games I have ever played. I remember beating both the Allied and Soviet campaigns and then playing for hours and hours with custom maps and 3rd party expansions. Man it was addictive. 

This cool offer from EA started on the 31st of August. However the servers are still online so you are not too late. Use the links below to download your full copy of RA1 and revisit the good old times.
