More updates from the BitTorrent scene – after the bitter shutdown of Elektronik a couple of days ago, this time we have a bit of good news. As you may know, torrent trackers automatically prune user accounts when they are not used for a certain amount of time (this time period is usually mentioned in the torrent site’s rules page). Pruned accounts are often not re-enabled unless the account owner gives a good reason – this has to be manually done through site staff. CoExist (CE), a ratio free private music tracker has taken a rather unusual decision to re-enable all accounts which were previously disabled for inactivity. If you joined CE sometime back and later abandoned it for some reason, now is a good time to revisit the site and have a look around. During the last couple of months CE has added many new features and almost doubled the size of their torrent index. If you are completely new to the site and want to sign up for an account, you can obtain an invite through their IRC invites channel as well.

CoExist

Launched in February 2009, CE was off to somewhat of a rocky start – initially it was based on Gazelle codebase and there were numerous issues with this implementation. However, the site’s coders managed to turn things around (switching to TBDEV in the process) and today CE is a well customized private tracker with many additional features not usually found most other music torrent sites including the well detailed ‘fame’ bonus points system. Although the site has been closed for signup throughout it’s lifespan, it has a strong active community of 2000+ registered members. CE currently tracks 8200+ active torrents, up from 3700 back in last October. All of the torrents point to high quality English music, music videos and OST spanning across 40+ different music genres.

CE Index

As we mentioned earlier, a good reason for you to revisit CE is the addition of new usability features. Following is a summary of new features added to site – and this only covers those introduced during the month of May.

  • Further integration between CE Radio and tracker interface. This includes updated themes, ability to search the torrent index based on what’s playing on radio, last.fm search and more.
  • Tweaks to the torrent browse page. This includes new category icons, cleaned up index structure with less clutter, color coded torrents and so on.
  • New album reviews page - accessible from the little green icon in the upper right or from this link.
  • New music news page – accessible from here.
  • Artist Wiki – accessible from this location.

And let’s not forget the infamous bonus system over at CE. Ratio system on this tracker is more or less replaced by the ‘Fame’ bonus system. There are multiple ways you can earn fame (seeding, etc). Once you earn enough fame, you can exchange them for various goodies at CoExist Record Shop. CE Record Shop is far more advanced that the average bonus exchange present on most private trackers. Goodies found in the record shop are placed in four categories; Unlockables, Raids, Invites and Disk Space. Some of the stuff that can be unlocked include hidden torrents, invites and even seedbox slots.

If you signed up for a CE account earlier, you will now be able to use your old login to enter the site. If you were never a member of this site but want to find out more, a new invite can be obtained from their official invites channel.

As we promised in a previous post, here’s our second Blackcats Games referrals giveaway. We will be giving away another 500 referral codes to our readers on a first come, first served basis. If you are a new visitor just joining us or if you somehow missed out on getting into BCG through our previous giveaway, you now have another chance to become a member of one of the best specialized games BitTorrent trackers on the planet. Blackcats-Games indexes and tracks video games for multiple gaming platforms including DOS/Windows PC, Playstation, PS2, PS3, XBOX, XBOX 360, Wii, Gamecube, Dreamcast, Android, iPhone and lots more. BCG is a closed community and for potential new members to get in, they need to be ‘referred’ by existing registered users – this is where our referral giveaway comes in.
UPDATE: We have received well over 500 requests. Please do not send any more emails – this giveaway has concluded. Please allow one week for the codes to be sent out.

Blackcats Games

In case you have no idea what this site is about, BCG tracks over 12000 active torrents of games for multiple gaming platforms, making it one of the largest games repositories on the net. Scene releases, non scene releases as well as unique member creations are available for download on BCG. The actual number of games indexed are much higher than 12000 as some of those torrents are ‘packs’ which usually bundle together several dozen games into one collection. After being online for ~7 years, the site has a very active community of gamers who keep forum discussions and comment threads alive while boosting the swarm speeds by seeding back files they grabbed. Since we discussed at length about the content and features of BCG in the previous giveaway article, we suggest you read that post if you seek more information or screenshots of BCG’s torrent index.

Before we continue with the referral giveaway, let us remind you that this is all made possible by stoi (SysOP) and rest of BCG staff – a huge thank goes to all of them for the excellent support given so far.

How to send the referral request

Referrals can be requested / sent back via E-mail. Before you send in the request, you need to prove that you have a basic understanding of how the Seed Points system and Hit and Run warning system functions on BCG (it’s not hard as it sounds). Please answer the three questions below and send the answers with your referral request email. Answers to all questions may be found by reading this forum post stoi made on FileSharingTalk (FST) forums.

  1. To receive Seed Points for a particular torrent, what is the minimum active time requirement you need to have on that torrent?
  2. What is the minimum individual ratio a torrent needs to have for you to safely stop seeding it (without getting it counted as a hit and run)?
  3. If you are seeding 5 BCG torrents at the same time, how many of those will receive seed points (assuming the torrents have fulfilled other requirements to earn seed points)?

Here’s how you need to send the referral request E-mail

  1. Address the E-mail to invites[dot]filenetworks[at]gmail[dot]com . Make sure to use an E-mail you usually check when sending the mail – this address will be used  when sending back the referral code.
  2. Set the subject to BCG 02 . Please don’t get this wrong as we use the subject to filter invite requests.
  3. In the message body, specify clearly your answers to all the questions mentioned above. Please do not quote the entire post and send it in – we only need specific answers.
  4. In message body, insert the link to your profile page of any private tracker you are currently a member of – for example http://sitename.com/user.php?id=12345 . You do not need to have a massive buffer or an unbelievable ratio – not being a Hit and Runner and not being a collector would be suffice (please do not attach or send links to screenshots – profile link is what’s required).
  5. Send the mail. If you are successful, a response with a referral code will be sent back.

Note : Users from Egypt cannot take part in this giveaway. BCG does not issue new Referrals to 41.X.X.X IP range.

Note 2: Do not post invite requests as comments to this post (they usually go something like “hi, please email me a referral blabla@bla.com thx in advance” – comments like this would be deleted). The only way to get a referral would be by following the 5 steps mentioned above.

Use your referral before it expires

As discussed in a previous post, a BCG referral code expires after 6 hours. That means, you have to use the code within 6 hours since we generate it or the code would become invalid. This is a core function built into BCG’s referral system and cannot be changed. We will however try to minimize the issues caused by time zone differences, delays with E-mail sending/receiving, etc by giving both advance notifications and real time updates on the whole process. We will be sending out referrals in batches of 125. We will notify you via Facebook, Twitter and SMS before and after each batch of codes is sent out. More info on how to get notified may be found below:

  • Twitter – Follow us on Twitter and we will Tweet whenever we send out a new batch of referral codes. http://twitter.com/filenetworks
  • Facebook page - ‘Like’ our Facebook page to become a fan of it. Then you will get an update on your FaceBook wall immediately after we send out referrals: http://www.facebook.com/filenetworks
  • SMS – If you are one of our Twitter followers or a Facebook fan, you can receive SMS alerts whenever we post updates to those services (including updates on referral sending status). To set up SMS updates with FILEnetworks Facebook page check this article.
To set up SMS updates with Twitter, read this post.
  • E-mail – An email with the code will be sent back to the E-mail account you used to send the referral request.

Please allow us one week to send out all the referral codes. This is not an automated process and we will have to manually verify the request, generate the referral and then send it to the requester via email. Needless to say it’s a time consuming process – and we all have enough Real Life & work commitments with very little free time.

If you didn’t receive a code after a certain batch of codes were sent out, don’t lose hope as you might get it in the next round. However do keep in mind that we only have 500 codes at our disposal and these will be served on a first come, first served basis.

What to do after you receive the referral code

Like many other areas of the site, BCG’s referral/signup/login system is very unique. Follow the steps below to use your referral code to create a new account:

  1. Visit http://www.blackcats-games.net
  2. TYPE the word referal into the search box (don’t change the spelling), without hitting submit or enter. Once you do, Email and referral code (aka referral link) text boxes will appear at the foot of the page
  3. Enter a valid email address (NO HOTMAIL) and code in the boxes given. Then submit.
  4. Check mail for link and proceed to signup page
  5. Fill in your details and submit. this will then send you a completion email and more importantly, the keyword.
  6. Back at http://www.blackcats-games.net you must type in the keyword in the search box. Username pass fields will appear at the foot of the page.
  7. Enter your credentials at the username, password fields and hit submit. Enjoy BCG

Again, special thanks to stoi for hooking us up with additional referral codes.

P.S- Thanks to everyone who posted suggestions on how this giveaway can be improved. We know we haven’t changed much but we’ll surely take your suggestions into count in future giveaways.

Elektronik.ro Shut Down

Posted by TEAM FILEnetworks | 6/05/2010 | , | 7 Comments »

If you were a member of the popular Electronic music torrent tracker Elektronik.ro, here’s some bad news – in fact, its the worst kind of news that could be associated with a BitTorrent tracker. ELEK is shutting down and it’s unlikely that the site will ever return. A news post on the homepage cites ‘obvious reasons’ as the cause for shutdown – however, we’re not quite sure what those obvious reasons might be. The site did not seem to have any donation issues and it’s unlikely that they ran into legal trouble. However a bad hosting provider could be a fine guess as ELEK suffered from frequent downtimes in the past couple of months. Either way this tracker will be missed by it’s loyal members – this definitely was one of the best places on the net to find and download EDM (Electronic Dance Music).

Elektronic.ro

Quoted below is the full announcement posted on site homepage:

a few days ago we decided to close elektronik, so here we are.
as you can see, all the torrents and torrents related content are unavailable.
forum and shoutbox are still opened and will stay like this for a while, so if you need to contact other users, now's the time to do it.
chances for elektronik to come back are very slim to none for reasons that were obvious in the last period.
that's about it.
thanks a lot for this great community.
thanks to all those people that helped us.
/elektronik staff (marrat, Sebi, derek, Eddie, frigideru, Lebe)

Although the site is currently online, most of the functionality has already been axed as mentioned in the new post.

Elektronik is one of the oldest private music trackers and has been online since mid 2005. If memory serves correct, the site tracked around 15000 active torrents before the shut down. It’s too bad the site won’t be around for it’s fifth birthday which would have been in just a couple more months. R.I.P. ELEK, thanks for the music.

As most of you know, we conducted our first Blackcats games referral giveaway about 10 days ago. Just like we promised, we have now sent out 500 free referrals to the first 500 qualifying requests that were sent to us. Since the number of requests we received easily surpassed 1500, many were left stranded without an invite. Here’s the good news – we’ll be giving away 500 more BCG referrals and the second giveaway would start sometime tomorrow (and you will be notified via a separate article when it does). But before we move on to the next giveaway, we’d like to address some common issues that were reported with the first. We would also like to hear your suggestions on how to improve the whole process – there will be many more invite giveaways on FILEnetworks in the future (other than BCG) and we’d like to make them as convenient as possible for our readers.

One of the most common issues that was reported to us (with BCG) was the expiration of referral codes. BCG referral codes expire after 6 hours since generation - this unfortunately is a matter beyond our control. The code expiry mechanism is a core function of BCG’s referral system (which I'm sure was never designed with public giveaways through a blog in mind) and it would be unfair to ask them to change the system as it would then affect all of the site’s 30000 users and not just the set of referrals given to us. However, we did take some steps to improve your chance with code expiry:

Referrals were given in batches of 125. Real time Notices were given via our Facebook and Twitter feeds about one hour before we started sending out the E-mails. Notifications were again sent after each batch of referrals was done sending. Those who subscribed to our FB and Twitter feeds got an ~8 hour window instead of the usual 6 hour period. We will be improving this process and for the second giveaway and our FB and Twitter followers will have the option to get notified via an SMS sent directly to your mobile (read this post for more information).

We know that this still does not solve all of the issues (such as those associated with time zone differences which again are beyond our control) but if you have any suggestions on how this process can be further improved, please feel free to comment. We cannot guarantee all of your suggestions will be implemented as we have limitations of our own but we’ll definitely do our best.

Note that none of the requests you sent for the first giveaway will be valid for the second. If you want to re-apply for a referral you’ll have to send a fresh request based on the guidelines given in the second giveaway article (which is yet to go live). Further instructions on how and what to send in the request will also be given in the post tomorrow. Until then, use this thread to post your suggestions. Please do not litter this with invitation requests as this clearly is not the time or place to do that.

Since we were talking about R5 movie release dates earlier, here’s a forum that you can use to check for updated R5 dates yourself. PeerAccess (formerly known as TorrentGeek) is a discussion forum which focuses on multiple topics including BitTorrent, direct downloads and several other themes related to online file sharing in general. Among the site’s many forum categories is a section dedicated to movie release dates. This section seems to be frequently updated and well maintained. PeerAcces however is not merely a discussion forum. It offers direct download links for a limited number of movies too. In fact, this site is home to P2P relase group T0XiC, a team of encoders who have released several CAM, TS and DVDRip movies.

PeerAccess

PeerAccess is not one of those huge forums where there are thousands of members - It’s a small community which’s existence is largely in the unknown. However, the administration seems to be a determined bunch who want to recruit more members and increase site activity.

As for the threads you’ll find on PeerAccess, the site deals with multiple topics. Most of the discussions are focused on private torrent trackers, open signups, tracker reviews, bonus points giveaways and so on. However, one of the main attractions of PA is it’s release dates section. This is where you can find updated R5, R1, R2 DVD release dates for popular movies.

PeerAccess Release Dates

These threads seem to be updated and cleaned up at least once a week. In addition, PA is home to TOXiC – a p2p release group who are responsible for leaking several movies online. PA indexes direct download links to most (if not all) T0XiC releases (and there is a thread where you can apply and become an encoder of the group). DDL Links for several non-TOXIC releases are indexed in the ‘Browser Torrents’ section of the site.

Registrations for PeerAccess are currently open. It may not be the most active forum out there as it’s still in the growing phase. You can check the site out for yourself by creating an account.

Site Name: PeerAccess (http://peeraccess.info)

Signup URL: http://peeraccess.info/register

We’ve been posting regular updates about R5 movie DVD release dates in the past couple of months. However, it’s not very easy to predict the exact launch date of a movie as these releases often get pushed around, postponed, etc due to last minute decisions by publishers. Here’s an updated, more accurate list of R5 release dates for the months of June, July and August 2010 – this list includes more movies & corrected dates compared to our last update located here. In addition to R5, release dates for several Blu Ray movies are also listed. Some of you might ask why knowing when the R5 would be out is important. Over the past couple of years R5 has become one of the ‘early video sources’ for scene and P2P groups who leak movies online  – the release of an R5 DVD means that a watchable pirated copy of the same movie is just around the corner.

Note : Information above was quoted from Sam’s Blog, which is an excellent resource that often features regularly updated lists of movie release dates.

Again, please note that dates mentioned here are subject to change. Movie studios change release schedules for various reasons and sometimes releases get pushed back by several months. Also, some of the R5’s scheduled to be released in June 2010 have already been leaked in various other forms such as DVDSCR, BRRip, R1 DVDRip etc).

I’m not really sure if there are folks around here who still aren’t members of the popular semi private BitTorrent tracker Demonoid. Since our old Demonoid invitation code giveaway threads still get requests, I’m assuming there are and hence this post. Demonoid is currently open for registrations and you can now get in without the need for an invite code. This usually happens once a month and it’s a window of opportunity for those who can’t find someone who’ll invite them into the site. Anyways this hugely popular BitTorrent tracker is a must have for any torrent fan, regardless of the fact if you are into private trackers or not. Demonoid has all sorts of content including stuff not usually found on the average general BT site and this includes comic books, audiobooks, old movies, game rips and lots of other files.

Demonoid

As of 6/3/2010, Demonoid currently indexes 275000+ torrents making it one of the largest indexers on the planet. However, it’s not merely a torrent indexer – Demonoid has it’s own BitTorrent tracker (inferno.demonoid.com) which tracks almost all of the indexed torrents. Being a semi private BitTorrent site, don’t expect the download speeds to be as fast as private trackers but most of the torrents are healthy and have enough leechers/seeders to keep them going thanks to the site’s huge user base (Alexa rank : 524). Anyways registrations are open and get in if you don’t have an account.

One of the plus sides of a major BitTorrent tracker or a torrent indexer going down is that this often leads to the birth of innovative new sites which serve a similar purpose. Kickasstorrents, now one of the most popular torrent indexers on the web, rose to fame during much darker times for several large BitTorrent sites (closure of Mininova, The Pirate Bay and IsoHunt’s legal issues and so on). Good thing about KickassTorrents is that it hasn’t stopped improving the user experience even after gaining so much traffic. The site’s developers have constantly been adding new features to KT and now it’s without a doubt one of the most user friendly & feature rich public torrent indexers in existence today. In case you haven't been following the news, here’s a summary of new features and enhancements introduced to KT over the last couple of weeks:

Kickass Torrents Logo

User achievements – KT now has an achievements system in place which rewards active members. All site activity including visiting the site, searching, downloading ,etc is counted by the new system. A full list of available achievements (currently 62) may be found on this page. A list of badges a particular user has achieved is listed on his/her profile page.
KT Achivements

Add to favorites – Adding a torrent to favorites is now easier than ever. All you need to do is to open the torrent description page and click on the ‘Heart’ symbol next to its name. Favorited torrents are accessible from the Bookmarks section of the site.
Bookmark KT

Audio/video quality – How many times have you seen folks rating movie torrents with comments such as “Audio 8/Video 10”? KT has automated this process by adding two new buttons to the comment form for movie torrents. The values you put in these drop downs will be automatically integrated to the comment you make.
KT Quality

Kickass Media Browser – This feature is currently available for TV show & movie torrents. It’s basically a sidebar widget that displays extended information and related links for files tracked by the torrent. The media browser also allows you to subscribe to any movie or TV Show and get updates when a new rip or series is uploaded.
KT Media Browser

The Download Sign – This is a small icon of an arrow that appears next to a username in torrent comments. The presence of this arrow near a commenter's name means that person  actually downloaded the torrent. It’s a good way to identify folks who trash torrents without downloading them first.
KT Download Sign

Follow Uploader Feature – A great feature where you can follow your favorite uploaders and get notified about their new uploads instantly. You can follow and uploader from their profile page.
Follow Uploader

Kickass Fake Finder – You can now check a torrent’s integrity by comparing its hash values. This beta feature available through the KT API may be accessed from this page.

User reputation – A ‘rep’ system is now in place where you can add or remove rep points for a user’s activity on site. You can add/remove points using the +/- present next to a user’s comment, etc. The total number of reputation points for a particular user is displayed on their profile page.

Search trends  - A special page where you can see the most popular searches on KickassTorrents. Includes weekly rankings for search keywords, calendar & more. The Search Trends page is located here.

Kickass People – This page is dedicated to the Kickass crew. Lists profiles for Admins, Mods, Super Mods and Uploaders all in one page. Kickass People page is located here.

Kickass Torrents Lite – A lite version of KT that’s optimized for speed. Features just a search bar and and loads in a snap. KT Lite may be accessed from this location.

One click login through Facebook – Despite having a rocky relationship with Facebook, KT now supports one click login to the site with Facebook connect.

Whenever there was a discussion about TV trackers in the last couple of weeks, the spotlight has been on BTN. While BTN definitely is a feature filled private tracker, it is not the only TV torrent site that’s been improving. This post is about ShareTheRemote (better known as STR), another gazelle based tracker that’s grown a fair bit since it’s launch several months ago. STR recently introduced a number of changes to its ratio system – this includes new free leech modes  (half leech, double upload), changes to what users placed under ‘ratio watch’ can download, changes to their TV show database (TheTVDB) and other minor tweaks. ShareTheRemote is currently closed for signup but they do have an official invites IRC channel where potential new members can get invited.

Share%20The%20Remote_thumb%5B2%5D[1]

Quoted below are some of the recent changes made to STR, as posted on news items on site homepage:

We have modified our tracker to support two new freeleech types. These are 'half-leech' and 'double upload'. Their functions are just as their names imply; when downloading half-leech torrents, only half of the data you download will be counted, and double upload torrents will award double the upload credit that you seed.
Effective Immediately: Torrents over 25GB are no longer freeleech, they are now half-leech.
Although this change may be met with some disparity, it is for the better of the site's health. Allowing so many large torrents to be freeleech was having detrimental effects on their seeder retention and the site's economy. We will be evaluating ways to counterbalance the loss of this freeleech for new users, so feel free to make suggestions!
We plan to use double upload as an incentive for people to download and seed underseeded torrents. We haven't came up with exact numbers for this yet, but we hope to have it implemented within the next few days.
Finally, due to TheTVDB's frequent downtime and decision to block embedding images from another torrent site, banners hosted on TheTVDB may no longer be used. It is still encouraged to use banners from that site, however you should first upload them to an image hosting site such as imgur.

Since we felt that the ratio brackets were not adequate for the size of torrents on this site, we've increased them by a factor of 1.5. This effectively increases the grace period for new users to 15GB. A full list of ratio requirements is available at rules.php?p=ratio.

We've rolled out another set of tracker changes that we hope you guys will enjoy.
The most notable of these changes is that users on ratio watch can now download full freeleech torrents. We hope that this will help users who find themselves on ratio watch without torrents that receive frequent traffic work their ways off of it.
To fix an oversight on my part, torrents may now be any logical combination of the three freeleech types. The main reasoning behind this change is to allow underseeded half-leech torrents to be double upload as well.
Additionally, the tracker now supports 'single user freeleech'. This feature treats every torrent as freeleech for any user who has this flag set. Although we do not know how or if this feature will be used, we decided to add it to prevent a later recompile if we decide to implement it.

STR details page

Although somewhat overshadowed by the success of BTN, ShareTheRemote too boats an impressive set of site features. They too have a TV Shows Database, detailed series pages, staff picks and even a TV news section. Series pages are similar to that of BTN – individual episodes and season packs for a particular show are accessible from a single location. The collector add-on found on these pages makes downloading all available full season packs for a particular show a breeze. In addition to the widgets you can see in the screenshot to the right, there is a recommendations add-on which suggests other similar shows to the user.

Currently, there are over 7200 users and nearly 5000 torrents indexed on this tracker. Some of these torrents are full season packs and some, as said earlier, are individual episodes. While STR already has a healthy flow of new daily torrents, they would need to improve this aspect if they are to compete against the likes of BTN, BMTV, etc who definitely add more content every day.

STR has been open for registration several times in the past but the site is currently invite only. However, there’s still hope for those who missed the open registrations (or for those hearing about this tracker for the first time right now). Although many are unaware, STR has an official invites channel hosted on their IRC server. You may get an invite by following the procedure mentioned on the channel topic.
