You probably have already heard about FileHippo.com – a well known website that offers thousands of freeware, shareware and demo software downloads. But did you know about FileHippo Update Checker? Update Checker is an application developed by the same folks behind FileHippo.com. It’s a nice little software that can be used to find updates to all installed software on your system with the click of a button.

Update Chekcer is a desktop application which is only 150KB in file size. It’ll first scan for all installed software on your system and match their current version numbers against the latest available build at FileHippo.com. If updated versions are available, Update Checker will take you to a page with download links for all updates. 

The download link Update Checker provides is usually the link to full program setup – not just an update patch. Note that your current software product keys, serials or other registration info (if any) are not guaranteed to work with a newer version. Also, if you have applied any cracks or patches to circumvent software copy protection, the crack too will need updating. Additionally, update checker will not detect updates for any of the portable software you use.

We have so far posted about a lot of music torrent trackers here on FILEnetworks Blog but this is the first time a tracker dedicated to Japanese/Korean music is being posted.  ToxicJ is a brand new private tracker that specializes in music from Japan & Korea. Although this site is all about Japanese content, site language and interface is in English. ToxicJ runs on the Gazelle codebase, a BitTorrent tracker script pioneered by what.cd.

First of all ToxicJ is a new private tracker – it’s less than one month old. The site only has around 200 users and indexes close to 50 torrents. Content on this tracker mainly comprise of Japanese/Korean MP3 music tracks (192, 256 and 320 bitrates) ripped from CDs (albums). There are several lossless music tracks in FLAC format available as well.

 

As you can see from the above screenshot, there are a lot of torrents on free leech (this was taken on 15/2/2009). There are 2-3 seeders present on most of the torrents. Just like any other tracker ToxicJ comes with new features of the Gazelle codebase including tagging, faster navigation and so on.

As I said earlier this is a new tracker and not much can be predicted about its future at this point. However, if you are a fan of Japanese or Korean music ToxicJ could be worth checking out – signups are currently open. You will also get 2 free invites upon signup.

A moment ago we posted about the standalone/offline installer for Windows Live Messenger 2009 build 14.0.8064.0206. This post features a new A-Patch version compatible with this WLM build. A-Patch is a useful little utility that allows you to ‘hack’ messenger and do several customizations that are otherwise unavailable. This includes disabling advertisements, removing unwanted menus, removing minimum nudge delay, enabling polygamy support and several others.

Since version 1.42 and 1.43, number of customization options available on A-Patch has been drastically reduced. the reason according to the developer is the new type of protection present in Windows Live 9 (2009) series of messenger. I’ve been using this app for more than 1.5 years and it hasn't given me any trouble so far. Check it out it’s damn useful.

Microsoft silently released a new build of Windows Live Messenger 2009 Final earlier this month. WLM 9 build 14.0.8064.0206 is the successor to previously released version 14.0.8050.1202. Up until yesterday, there was no full/standalone installer available for the new build. Users who wanted to download it had to reply on the Windows Live Essentials web installer. If you were looking for an offline installer for Live Messenger 14.0.8064.026, we have some good news.

The offline installer will be useful for people who have multiple computers, limited bandwidth internet connections, unstable internet connections etc. The idea is to download the entire setup file to hard disk and then use it to install on any number of computers whenever, wherever you like.

By the way Microsoft have again refrained from releasing a changelog for this latest update – there is no official word on what has been changed/fixed/improved in build 14.0.8064.0206. I could not find any notable changes between the two versions but upgrading to the latest available build of WLM is highly recommended.

So far I’ve not been able to find a direct download link to the Standalone/Offline installer on Microsoft download center. However, I managed to find one on Softpedia which is just as reliable.

Over the past few months, many free E-book download sites have been posted here on FILEnetworks Blog. This included both E-Learning torrent trackers as well as sites that contained direct download links for popular books. This post features Gigapedia, probably the largest E-Book download site that’s currently online. Gigapedia is not a torrent tracker – it offers verified download links to thousands of E-Books stored in one click hosting sites such as RapidShare.

For the unregistered user, Gigapedia will look like a simple book review site which does not offer any downloads. This however is far from the truth. Once you create a free account and log in, you’ll see what we mean. There are more than 150000 E-Books (both old and new) spanning across a wide variety of categories waiting to be downloaded. For example, close to 25000 books can be found in the ‘Computers/IT’ section alone. Educational material is not all Gigapedia has in store – I even managed to find complete TinTin and Asterix comic book collections to be online as well.

 
See the numbers in leftmost column? That’s the number of books in that particular category!

Another nice feature of Gigapedia is the category specific RSS feeds. You can subscribe to any one of these feeds and get instant updates when new books are added.

Note that download links for a particular book can only be found in the links tab (located near top left hand corner of book description page):
 
Links mostly point to one click hosting sites such as RapidShare, MegaShare, FileFactory, 4shared, megaupload and so on. All these links are verified – Gigapedia linking to fakes or virus infected files almost never happens.

There are however some downsides of Gigapedia as well.  The Google Custom search embedded into the site rarely helps you find the desired book. Instead of using that, I recommend you use the search located on top right hand corner of the page.
 
Choose ‘Gigapedia’ from the drop down menu, enter your query and hit search.

If I remember correctly, this site was closed to public registrations a while back. Don’t worry - it’s currently open and you can create an account for free.

A quick update on several trainers that have been released for FEAR 2 : Project Origin. As usual, Cheathappens have released a promotional version of their trainer which only has one option (increased accuracy). To get the full version which has around 12 options, you need to have a Cheathappens unlimited account (which is a paid subscription).

FYI the full Cheaphappens trainer includes options such as Unlimited Health, Unlimited Armor, Unlimited Ammo, No Reload, No Weapon Overheat, Unlimited Slo-Mo, Improved Accuracy, Increased Sprint Speed, Unlimited Sprint, Hover Mode, No Clipping Mode and Save/Load Position (Teleport). As far as I know, the full trainer has not leaked anywhere yet. You can however download the promotional version for both 1.0 and 1.01 versions of the game.

By the way, I found another trainer for FEAR 2 which has 5 options (created by KelSat). Unlike Cheathappens, this one comes free. Note that I could not test this trainer (it’s for build 1.0 of FEAR 2 and by the time I discovered this one I had updated the game to patch 1.01.2255.0).

How to get into #invites IRC Channel

1. Download and install mIRC from here.
2. Restart your web browser if it was open during mIRC installation.
3. Click on irc.pussytorrents.org:6011/invites  to join the channel.
4. If mIRC presents you with a ‘Link Request’ window, choose ‘Change to the new server and join the channel’ option or ‘open a new connection’ option. Press ok.

If you are not using mIRC, just join #invites channel on server irc.pussytorrents.org:6011 from whatever IRC client you are using. If you don’t have an IRC client installed on your system, you can use the web based IM service Mibbit which supports IRC protocol.

What to do once on the invites IRC Channel?

It’s pretty much explained in detail on the channel topic. But since some people were having problems in the last giveaway, here is a brief tutorial. However it is strongly recommended that you read the current channel topic for the most current information.

1. Go to the link mentioned on the channel topic. Register for a Travian account using a valid email address. Verify your registration by clicking the link on confirmation email.
2. Back on the #invites IRC channel, send a private message (PM) to username mentioned in channel topic with your Travian username, verification number and the E-mail address you used in step 2 above. Sending a PM using mIRC can be done by double clicking on the user’s name from the list on the right panel.

While trying to connect to the IRC channel, you may run into error messages or other issues. Read the possible solutions mentioned below to get around them.

If you get Server ERROR: :Closing Link: [IP] Z:Lined (You look like a bot. Be sure to fill in your nick/ident/realname properly.) while trying to connect using mIRC:

1. Fill in you mIRC Full name, Email Address, Nickname, and Alternative Nickname using believable values - do not use nicks such as Guest23781. (To change these values go to mIRC Tool Menu->Options and Choose ‘Connect’ from right panel).
2. Save the values and reboot your computer. Try reconnecting the channel now.

Did anyone notice that today is Friday the 13th. According to Wikipedia, “Friday the 13th is a superstition about a day of good or bad luck”. Well I don’t know about bad luck but today definitely is a good day for fans of Horror/Cult movies and TV Shows. Why? The Horror Charnel (THC), probably the best private torrent tracker around for horror themed content, has opened signups after being closed for ages.

As of 13/9/2009, THC indexes around 500 torrents (Note that this is the number of active torrents on the tracker - only includes the ones added after October 2008). If you are a fan of horror and cult movies, you’ll feel at home because THC has a great community. It already has a user base of close to 2000 members and the number of users is expected to grow rapidly during the open signups.

As for the content on THC, this tracker indexes both TV shows and movies related to the cult genre. Amongst the torrents indexed are some very rare horror movies, older horror themed TV shows (Friday the 13th TV series, shorts, TV documentaries and more. There are some great packs online as well. By now you probably have heard about private torrent trackers such as ‘The Vault’ (How to get in), ‘The Place’ & ‘The Box’. All these are specialized private trackers which contain some of the rarest torrents around. ‘The Occult’ the the newest project launched by the same folks behind aforementioned sites. Just like their previous projects, TheOccult already tracks a very rare collection of torrents, most of them not found elsewhere.

The Occult has some of the most unusual & uncommon torrent categories I’ve ever seen on a private tracker (Mythology, Scientology, Drugs, Shamanism, Astrology to name a few). As the name suggests, it specializes in torrents related to various cults, ways of living, religions, healing and so on. To get a better idea of the content on this tracker, refer to the categories section towards the end of this article. Media on TheOccult include PDF E-Books, DVDs, MP3 audio, etc.

The Occult, after being in beta for about 1.5 months, seems to be fully operational by now. Currently there are close to 800 registered users and around 350 torrents on this tracker. The site is also open for signup. There is a maximum user limit of 6000 so it can be expected that the open signups will continue for some time.
