While we wait for new PC titles to be released in 2009, here is an old classic that’ll help you kill time. Dangerous Dave is definitely one of my favorite games of all time. It’s a platform game where you assume control of ‘Dave’. You have to make your way through 10 levels filled with various hazards and creatures as well as diamonds which you can collect to increase your score.

I’ve been playing this game from time to time since the early 1990’s and but haven't managed to beat it yet (which is a little embarrassing). I’ve made it to the 10th level but never got around to finishing the game completely. All in all it’s a fun game to play, even in 2009.

How to play Dangerous Dave on Windows Vista, XP, Linux and Mac OS X

If you current operating system does not support MS-DOS programs and games, you may receive errors such as “This system does not support fullscreen mode. Choose ‘Close’ to terminate the application” as well as other general protection faults. You can easily play Dangerous Dave (or any other DOS based game) on such operating systems with DOSBox. You probably already know about the Trojan Troj/Qhost-AC (as identified by Sophos) which blocks access to two of the most popular BitTorrent sites The Pirate Bay and Mininova.org. In addition to these two BitTorrent sites, the Trojan also blocks access to SuprBay.org (TPB and SuprNova.org’s official forums ). It does this by adding a few lines to your Windows hosts file. If you somehow got infected by this Trojan, here is how you can edit the hosts file to restore access to the blocked sites.

1. Locate the directory of your hosts file.
By default, the hosts file on Windows Vista, XP, 2003 or Windows NT is located in the folder X:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\ (where X is the drive letter to which Windows is installed to, usually C:\)
In Windows 98, the hosts file is located in the directory to which windows is installed to (usually C:\Windows)
Linux/Unix: /etc
Mac OS X: /private/etc/hosts

2. Once inside the directory, locate hosts file (it has no extension). Open it with a text editor such as notepad.

3. Now carefully search the contents of the hosts file for any of the following lines:

• 127.0.0.1   www.mininova.org
• 127.0.0.1   www.mininova.com
• 127.0.0.1   www.thepiratebay.org
• 127.0.0.1   www.suprbay.org
• 127.0.0.1   mininova.org
• 127.0.0.1   mininova.com
• 127.0.0.1   thepiratebay.org
• 127.0.0.1   suprbay.org

4. If any of the lines above are found, remove them from the hosts file. Once cleanup is complete, save the file.

You should now be able to access the blocked sites. Note that this Trojan also adds the comment “Fuck You” to the hosts file. It does not affect your browsing since it’s merely a comment. If you want, you can get rid of it by deleting the line # FUCK YOU.

Coda.fm is a new public BitTorrent index where you can find and download torrents of full music albums. It’s a relatively new site which is only a few days old but I’ve got to say that it looks very promising. The layout of Coda.fm is user friendly and simplifies the process of discovering and downloading music albums. Although the site is only several days old, a good number of new and popular music albums are already indexed. 

As of this moment, Coda.fm does not operate it’s own BitTorrent tracker. It however does host .torrent files which utilize external trackers such as The Pirate Bay. Although these torrents use public trackers, you don’t need to worry about fakes or virus infected files - all torrents indexed on Coda.fm are verified before they are indexed. Tracks in albums I’ve downloaded so far were all MP3 files with 320 kbps bitrate – the sound quality was good and file size of a single album was around 100-120MB.  

It’s not just the torrent files of albums that Coda.fm has to offer. For each indexed music album, a plethora of information about it such as the album review, track list, artist information, list of recommended albums and album cover art is provided. General site navigation is user friendly as well. You can search for a specific album or browse the album list by artist, music genre, popularity, etc. Coda.fm provides RSS feeds for new releases. If you subscribe to these you’ll be notified instantly of new music album releases. 

Coda.fm does not require registration (it’s optional). You can just visit the site and start downloading. It looks promising and I’m sure a lot of music fans will be interested in this site. Check it out.

Face The Music (FTM) is one of those secret private trackers of which not many people have heard about. Launched back in June 2008, it’s a relatively new entrant to the BitTorrent scene. FTM does not track general content– it’s a niche tracker specializing in music torrents. Music related to several different genres such as Techno, DnB, House and Electro can be found on this tracker.

Although it’s been 6 months since the launch, FTM currently has only around 350 registered members. The aforementioned secrecy could be one of the reasons for this low member count. At the time this post is being written, it tracks close to 350 torrents.

Although it’s rare for secret trackers to open signups, FaceTheMusic’s doors are currently open to the public. We don’t know when the signups will close or for how long it will remain open. But if you are interested in joining this tracker, now would be a good time to do so.

nVIDIA’s ForceWare version 185.20 beta drivers are now available for download. ForceWare 185.20 is the successor to previously released ForceWare 181.00 beta (with OpenGL 3.0) drivers. These drivers are compatible with Windows Vista 32-bit/64-bit as well as Windows XP 32-bit operating systems. The Vista version of ForceWare 185.20 driver is compatible with recently leaked Windows 7 Build 7000.

I have tested these drivers both on Windows Vista as well as on Windows 7 Build 7000. The only games I could test were Grand Theft Auto 4 and Fallout 3. For me the performance on Windows XP was unchanged from my existing driver (ForceWare 180.84). However on Windows 7 Build 7000, I noticed a 3-5FPS increase with GTA 4. Note that these are still beta drivers and there is no guarantee that everyone will experience the same performance on their systems. If you are an avid reader of FILEnetworks Blog, you know that we bring you latest news and open signup updates on private trackers of all shapes and forms. The Iota Project (TiP) is one of the newer private trackers to enter the BitTorrent scene - It’s only about 3 weeks old and is very young. TiP is a general tracker which tracks a variety of scene and p2p releases across a number of different categories such as software, music and movies.

As of now, The Iota Project does not offer anything drastically different from what most other general/0Day trackers have. It currently has around 1000 members and track over 200 torrents. Although these stats may seem low when compared to other trackers, don’t forget that TiP is a brand new site. From what I have heard, there are some ex-staff members of Araditracker (R.I.P.) involved in The Iota Project. If this is true, you can expect good things coming from this tracker as Aradi was one of the best BitTorrent communities that existed.

In addition to the torrent files, TiP has already implemented many of the ‘value added’ features of a tracker such as a requests section, IRC support, forums and even radio. However it’s too early to tell if TiP will grow onto become one of the better private trackers or will fade away as just another general tracker. Signups are currently open and interested readers may join for free.

I know for a fact that many readers don’t like the idea of joining ‘IRC channels’ - many seem to have the impression that IRC is something complicated which only power users are supposed to use. This is not true and with the right software, visiting an IRC channel can become as easy as logging onto a web site. mIRC is one such software which you can use to easily join many public and private IRC chat rooms.

What commands do i need to know to join IRC servers and visit IRC Channels?

With mIRC installed, you only need to know two simple commands to connect to an IRC server and to join a channel; /server and /join.

Let’s say you want to connect to channel (room) #ircchannel on IRC server irc.ircserver.net.
The following command (entered on mIRC console) will connect you to the IRC server: /server irc.ircserver.net
Once you join the server, you can use the /join command to join the desired channel: /join #ircchannel

Better yet, to directly join the channel, simply type the link in the following format , paste it on your browser window and press enter: irc://irc.ircserver.net/ircchannel
Browser should prompt to open the link with mIRC and when opened it will directly open the channel window. Note that in this URL format, the protocol used is irc:// and the # in front of channel name is not used.
As another example, direct link to TorrentLeech IRC channel can be written as below:
irc://irc.torrentleech.org:7011/torrentleech
(:7011 is the port number)

This method however won’t work with invite only rooms. You’ll most likely be given specific instructions to get yourself invited to such rooms.
