We’ve previously posted a lot of BitTorrent trackers such as MVGroup (Open) and Docs.Torrents.Ro (Open) from where you can download premium documentaries. But none of these were dedicated documentary sites. Docs4You is perhaps the first site posted on FILEnetworks Blog which specializes in documentaries. It however is not a BitTorrent tracker – it’ a forum which contains hundreds of verified one click hosting links to premium documentaries and TV Shows.

Although you may not have heard about this site before, Docs4You is not a small forum by any means -There are currently over 23000 registered members. Hundreds of documentary videos from channels such as Discovery, National Geographic, Animal Planet, BBC, PBS, HBO, Frontline, Imax, Channel 4 and lots more can be found on this site. In addition, Docs4You has a small section where links to regular TV series can also be found.

Download links on this forum are pretty reliable - Most links point to RapidShare hosted content but I have never run into a fake or a virus infected file so far. For those interested, registrations are currently open.

Several days ago, we posted 5 new registration keys to popular private torrent tracker Pretome.net. These keys were obtained from Pretome torrents uploaded to public torrent trackers. From today onwards, you don’t need to bother with such keys that may expire at any moment. Pretome admins have offered to provide a free registration key to FILEnetworks Blog readers every month :)

Spam E-mail is a problem almost every user faces. There are many anti spam applications around but most of these are bulky, resource consuming or are ineffective at catching spam. Spamihilator is a lightweight but effective tool to combat junk E-mail which I've been using with good results. It runs in the background and supports a number of E-Mail clients including Outlook, Thunderbird and Eudora.

Just when we were talking about Romanian BitTorrent users, here is a Romania based private torrent tracker opening signups. ARM Tracker is a general/0Day tracker with lots of English scene and p2p releases. It’s been around for a while and currently indexes nearly 1500 active torrents. Exact number of users on this tracker is unknown but most of the new torrents are pretty well seeded.

In addition to individual scene and p2p torrents, ARM Tracker has a good collection of packs. I noticed that several of these packs had tags such as ‘BiTT’ and ‘BestShare’ which perhaps means that they were obtained from other Romanian trackers such as Bittorrents.ro (Open) and BestShare.ro (Down). Nevertheless don’t forget to check the packs section on ARM Tracker:

Most of these packs are on free leech which is a good thing given that some of them exceed 100GB in size. Pre times on this tracker are average – Don’t expect SCC or SCT pres but they will not be painfully slow either. Signups are currently open so interested readers may join for free.

DVDFab is an application which I have come to trust over the years. It’s probably one of the easiest ways to copy, covert and burn copy protected DVDs. DVDFab can successfully copy DVDs protected by CSS, CPPM, RC, RCE, APS, UOPs, ARccOS, RipGuard, FluxDVD and CORE X2 protection mechanisms. Additionally, you can customize copied DVDs, combine DVDs, split DVDs into several disks (ex- 1 DVD9 copied on two DVD5 disks) and burn them all using DVDFab.

Version 5.2.2.2 was released on the 24th of December and it incldues several bugfixes over the previous build (5.2.2.0). If you download a lot of DVDRs from private torrent trackers such as DVDQuorum, The DVD Club, BitHQ or Asian DVD Club, this application could be useful for you.

We recently posted about the A-Patch which allows you to remove advertisements in Windows Live Messenger. Here is a similar application that can remove advertisements in AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Not only can it disable ads but it can also remove unwanted software such as Viewpoint Media Player and WildTangent which come bundled with some AIM installations.

AIM ad hack functions similar to A-Patch. First you get to select which options you want to apply. Then all you have to do is it patch AIM with the press of a button. This is a one time thing and then you can forget about it altogether (no need to keep the hack running in the background). No one really likes ads on their IM so we hope you’ll find this little application pretty useful.

DVDQuorum is a Spanish private torrent tracker with both English and Spanish movies. Just like BitHQ, TheDVDClub and AsianDVDClub (Open), DVDQuorum tracks full DVDs of movies and TV Shows which contain original menus, audio streams and subtitles. You won’t find any XViD encoded DVDRips on this tracker as it only indexes untouched DVD5 and DVD9 releases (for XViD rips, try these movie trackers).

With over 43000 members and over 13500 indexed torrents, DVDQuorum is one of the largest DVDR trackers currently online. Note that this tracker has some Spanish movies. But majority of the releases are either English or Multilanguage. If you are a non Spanish user and want to make sure the movie you download has English audio, check the ‘Forum Link’ (The Blue Icon) next to torrent title. This will take you to a forum post with detailed information on that particular release.

Also note that every torrent has two titles. One on the top is in Spanish and the other one (marked by a red arrow in above screenshot) is the English name. A torrent with a Spanish title does not necessarily mean it’s a Spanish language release – Always check the forum link (marked by the red circle) to determine the available spoken languages on the DVD. Note that English is sometimes referred to as Inglés on this tracker Ex- AUDIO: Español Dolby Digital 5.1, Inglés Dolby Digital 5.1.

Update: It appears that Waffles.fm has now lifted the ban on Romania. Good news for our Romanian readers :)

Waffles.fm, one of the best private music torrents trackers, has banned all Romanian users from the site since the 23rd of December. The ban has not only affected potential new users but has resulted in existing Waffles members who are from Romania not being able to access the site as well.

Below is quoted from an update posted by a mod @ Waffles.fm:

Due to Romania being largely a cesspool of spam, viruses, phishing, and fraud, and phishing attempts, fraudulent donations, cheating, and the like from various Romanian IPs with zero action on the part of Romanian ISPs, Romania is hereby banned from Waffles. Please take care to not invite people if you know they're in or from Romania. We will not take action against you, but may change tune in the future.

Waffles is not the only tracker to ban Romania – several other high level trackers such as SCC have been blocking Romanian IP ranges for quite a while now. In almost all of these cases, the cause of the ban (as explained by tracker admins) has been above-the-norm number of cheaters being reported from Romania. Obviously this does not mean that every Romanian BitTorrent user is a cheater – it’s a prime example of how a handful of cheaters can ruin it for a number of good users who probably followed every tracker rule.

On the other hand, I can’t understand why anyone from Romania would want to cheat. As far as I know broadband connections in Romania are damn fast. Plus they have some of the best private trackers around such as iPlay, SceneFZ, CZONE (which AFAIK is an actual ISP), TorrentBits (Open) all of which have tons of Romanian users and still have great download speeds.

It’s a well known fact that you need to have your Anti Virus software up to date in order to be protected from latest viruses and other malware. Most security software vendors tend to provide updates over the internet. But what if you have a computer that is not connected to the internet or is having limited internet connectivity (low bandwidth, data cap, etc)? This article describes how you can update your Anti Virus software manually using offline definition updates.

Although most Anti Virus software have a built in automatic updates feature, vendors tend to release standalone update installers usually through their official website. Once you download one of these offline installers, you can use it to update virus definition files even on Anti Virus software installed on computers without internet access (Ex- Download offline installer from work computer which has internet access and then use the installer to update home computer which is not connected to the internet). Below is a list of locations where you can find and download offline definition update installers for several popular Anti Virus software.

1. Kaspersky Internet Security and Kaspersky Anti Virus

Offline updates for Kaspersky version 5, 6 and version 7 products can be downloaded from this page. If you are using the new Kaspersky Anti Virus 2009 or Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 products, there is a separate procedure you need to follow. 2. AVG
 
These offline definition updates are for the free version of AVG. AVG 7.5 offline updates can be downloaded from this page while AVG 8.0 definition updates can be found here.

3. Mcafee
 
Note that not all of Mcafee’s Anti Virus products support offline updating. I’m not sure if products such as Mcafee Total Protection 2009 can be updated offline. However, updating some versions such as VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i/8.7i is possible. You can download the latest virus definition .DAT files from this page.
Note: DAT files are definition updates, SUPERDAT files are definition + scan engine updates

4. BitDefender
 
Although many people don’t know, BitDefender releases offline updates for almost all of its security products including BitDefender Internet Security 2009. All of these updates can be downloaded from this page.

5. Symantec/Norton security products
 
Most Norton Anti Virus products and Symantec Anti Virus products including corporate versions can be updated offline. Visit this page and choose your product under ‘Download Definitions by Product’ option.

6. Trend Micro
 
Trend Micro offers pattern files to update a number of security products offline including Trend Micro Internet Security. Latest pattern files and installers can be obtained form this page.

7. Sophos
 
Sophos definition files are called Virus Identity Files (IDE) - self extracting zip files with latest IDE files are released regularly. You can download them from here. Note that Sophos products older than 3 months cannot be updated offline.

8. F-Secure
 
F-Secure regularly releases a file named latest.zip which includes the newest virus definition files. You can download and use this file to update your F-Secure security product manually. The most current version of latest.zip and a tutorial on how to manually update can be found on this page. 

9. Avast
 
Only 4.X versions of Avast! can be updated offline. You can download the iAVS utility which will update your Avast! product automatically. Latest iAVS can be freely downloaded from this page. 

10. Avira
 
A number of Avira products such as Avira Antivir Windows Professional, Avira AntiVir Premium and Avira Premium Security Suite can be updated offline using the VDF update. You can download latest offline definition files for Avira from here.

1. BitMeTV (BMTV)
 
After declaring a relaxed invite policy for December 2008, BitMeTV (BMTV) caught me by surprise when they announced site wide freeleech today.
