Yesterday, we talked about how to install Windows Vista alongside Windows XP in a dual boot configuration. But what if you began hating Vista and wanted it out of your system for good? Booting to Windows XP and simply formatting the partition that Windows Vista is installed on will not work. Once Vista is installed, the default boot loader will be Vista's Boot Manager, not the boot.ini file of Windows XP. So if you screw Vista, you risk not being able to access Windows XP installation as well. So is there a way to remove Vista without harming your XP installation? Fortunately, there is.

windows.logo_thumb

1. First of all, make sure you have a working Vista installation DVD or an image of it so that you can mount it using a DVD emulation software such as Daemon Tools.

2. Boot to Windows XP and insert or mount the Vista installation DVD. Close any Autorun Windows that appear.

3.Type the following command in the run prompt:

 x:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt52 ALL /force

(Where x is the drive letter of your DVD-ROM drive or virtual drive)

4. Now reboot the computer. You will notice the Windows Boot Manager no longer present at startup. Windows XP will boot automatically.

5. In XP environment, format the partition to which you installed Vista.

6. Now browse to the partition where Windows XP is installed on. Delete the files Boot.BAK and Bootsect.BAK in the root folder.

Windows Vista is now completely removed from your system and Windows XP is once again your default operating system.

It's been ages since Vista was released and I'm still having second thoughts on fully migrating to Vista. Thankfully, Vista can be installed on top of an existing Windows XP installation in a dual boot configuration. This is a great way to try out the new features of Vista while still having your good old XP installation at the ready in case something went wrong or if you simply prefer XP over Vista.

windows.logo

The process is fairly straightforward:

You will need a separate partition (or another hard drive if you have one) other than the one on which XP is installed. Technically it's possible to install both OS on the same partition but it will surely bite you in the ass once you install several software. So make sure you have a separate primary partition ready to install vista on and make sure you have at least 10GB free space available on it. Hint: Use a 3rd party utility such as GParted Live CD or Norton Partition Magic to create and resize partitions.

Now insert your Windows Vista DVD into the drive. There are two possible ways to run setup:

  1. Boot to Windows XP and run Vista setup from DVD
  2. Boot directly from the Windows Vista DVD

I would suggest you go for the second option. Whichever on you choose, make sure you choose the 'Custom (Advanced)' mode in Vista setup.

Once you reach the step where you need to select the drive to install Vista on, carefully select the partition you created earlier (You can create and delete partitions even in Vista setup but resizing will not be an option as with 3rd party tools). Do not select the partition on which Windows XP is installed.

Allow the installation to complete. Now, every time you boot the machine, you will be taken to the Windows Boot Manager.

This is where you choose the Windows version you want to boot up. Choosing Microsoft Windows Vista will launch Windows Vista and choosing 'Earlier version of Windows' will launch Windows XP.

Textbook Torrents is a private torrent tracker specializing in.....well...Text Books. Yes, thousands and thousands of text books in electronic form, belonging to various categories ranging from Computer Engineering to Chemistry. The tracker was one of it's kind and was a great resources for students and professionals alike.  However the site went offline a few days ago, all thanks to some copyright holders who  obviously did not understand how file sharing worked. For detailed information about the downtime and the resurrection, please read this forum post.

We'll quote some important points in the post here as well:

" If you plan to use the tracker, bear in mind that our textbooktorrents.com domain is currently out of service. You can update your own system to pretend that the domain works properly by inserting the following into your hosts file:
85.17.226.223 textbooktorrents.com
If you are running Windows, you can find the file in C:\system32\drivers\etc, and on UNIX-based systems including Mac OS X and Linux it can be found in /etc.

I should point out that this kerfuffle has drained all of our reserve funds. If you have the money, please consider
donating to the site. I want to build up at least two months' worth of expenses in case of emergency, and at the moment we have no money with which to pay the server bills due at the beginning of September."

Note: The domain www.textbooktorrents.com may still be unavailable due to DNS issues. Use http://85.17.226.223/ to access the site till these issues are resolved. Also note that you must do the hosts file updating (as explained above) if you want to seed.

All in all Textbook Torrents is back and it looks like they will be here for a long time. Also, if you still haven't joined the site, registrations are open so check it out!

A new build of of Media Player Classic (MPC) just released. Media Player Classic is an excellent software which is much less bloated but does the job better than most other software in its league. The best thing i love about MPC is that it comes built in with most popular codecs so i don't have to find and install them from external sources.

250px-Media_Player_Classic_screenshot

Features

  • MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 playback - Media Player Classic is capable of VCD, SVCD and DVD playback, without the need to install any additional software or codecs. It has built-in codecs for MPEG-2 video with support for subtitles and codecs for LPCM, MP2, AC3 and DTS audio, and also contains an improved MPEG splitter that supports playback of VCDs and SVCDs using its VCD/SVCD/XCD Reader. On October 30, 2005 Gabest added *.mp4 and MPEG-4 Timed Text support. An AAC decoding filter has been present in MPC for a while, which makes MPC suitable for AAC playback in MP4, and an alternative to Winamp and iTunes.
  • DirectShow, QuickTime and RealPlayer architectures - Media Player Classic is primarily based on the DirectShow architecture, and therefore automatically uses installed DirectShow decoding filters. For instance, after the open source DirectShow decoding filter ffdshow has been installed, fast and high quality decoding and postprocessing of the DivX, Xvid, H.264 and Flash Video formats is available in MPC. In addition to DirectShow, MPC can also use the QuickTime and the RealPlayer architectures (if installed on the computer) to play their native files.
  • Matroska and Ogg containers - Media Player Classic supports native playback of OGM and Matroska container formats. However, OGM audio playback is limited by a lack of support for the CoreVorbis DirectShow filter, which mainly affects newer OGM files (c. 2006). The crux of this problem is that MPC is hard-coded to use an older Vorbis filter, so even if one installs newer filters, MPC is unable to use them.
  • TV tuners - MPC supports playback and recording of television if a supported TV tuner is installed.
