OpenOffice.org 2.2

Posted by TEAM FILEnetworks | 4/22/2007 | | 4 Comments »

OpenOffice.org is a free office suite of applications available for many different operating systems including Linux, Microsoft Windows, Solaris, OpenVMS, IRIX and Mac OS X. It supports the OpenDocument standard for data interchange. OpenOffice.org is based on StarOffice, an office suite developed by StarDivision and acquired by Sun Microsystems in August 1999. The source code of the suite was released in July 2000 with the aim of reducing the dominant market share of Microsoft Office by providing a free, open and high-quality alternative. OpenOffice.org is free software, available under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL).

Included applications

  • Writer — a word processor similar in look and feel to Microsoft Word and offering a comparable range of functions and tools. It also includes the ability to export Portable Document Format (PDF) files with no additional software, and can also function as a WYSIWYG editor for creating and editing web pages.
  • Calc — a spreadsheet similar to Microsoft Excel with a roughly equivalent range of features. Calc provides a number of features not present in Excel, including a system which automatically defines series for graphing, based on the layout of the user's data. Calc is also capable of writing spreadsheets directly as a PDF file.
  • Impress — a presentation program similar to Microsoft PowerPoint. It can export presentations to Adobe Flash (SWF) files allowing them to be played on any computer with the Flash player installed. It also includes the ability to create PDF files.
  • Base — a database program similar to Microsoft Access. Base allows the creation and manipulation of databases, and the building of forms and reports to provide easy access to data for end-users. As with Access, Base is able to work as a front-end to a number of different database systems, including Access databases (JET), ODBC data sources and MySQL/PostgreSQL.
  • Draw — a vector graphics editor comparable in features to CorelDRAW. It features versatile "connectors" between shapes, which are available in a range of line styles and facilitate building drawings such as flowcharts.
  • Math — a tool for creating and editing mathematical formulae, similar to Microsoft Equation Editor. Formulae can be embedded inside other OpenOffice.org documents, such as those created by Writer. It supports multiple fonts and can export to PDF.
  • QuickStarter — a small program for Windows and Linux that runs when the computer starts for the first time. It loads the core files and libraries for OpenOffice.org during computer startup and allows the suite applications to start more quickly when selected later.
  • The macro recorder — is used to record user actions and replay them later to help with automating tasks, using OpenOffice.org Basic

How to get it

It's free and no crack is needed. In addition to this, it's available as a direct download from a fast server.

This post is related to a previous article. A lot of users had emailed us asking how to create a bootable Vista upgrade DVD as Vista setup was giving errors (for some users only) when run from within a Windows environment. Unfortunately the directly burning the 3 files to a CD wont make it bootable and solve all your problems. But there is a way.

This is how you create a bootable Vista Ultimate Upgrade DVD using the 3 files available.

1. Locate the downloaded files (boot.wim, install.wim, X13-49120.exe)and copy them to your root drive (Ex- C:\) Do not create a folder, just put them in the root drive.

2. Run x13-49120.exe, this will extract files to a folder named 'Vista' in your root drive. (Ex- C:\Vista, where C is the drive letter in which you placed the files in step 1 )

3. Download CDImage program. Extract and place cdimage.exe (place only the exe file, dont create a folder) in your root drive (same drive where you put the files in step 1).

4. Open command prompt. (Start Menu-->Run -->cmd.exe . Press Enter)

5.In command prompt navigate to C:\ drive (assuming C is your root drive). If you dont know how to do this, type 'C:' (without quotes) in command prompt and press enter. Then type 'cd\' (without quotes) and press enter once more.

6. Type the following command exactly as displayed below, in command prompt.

"cdimage -m -u2 -b C:\Vista\boot\etfsboot.com C:\Vista C:\Vistax86.iso" (without quotes)

Command prompt will display the progress of Image creation.

7. Once it shows 100% complete, you will see a new file created in the C drive (Vistax86.iso) This is a Vista Ultimate Upgrade bootable image.

8. Burn the newly created image using an image burner (Nero, PowerISO etc). Make sure you burn it using the 'burn image' or 'disk image or saved project (in Nero)' option in your Burner app. Burning the iso file to a single using normal burn wont work.

9. Once the image is created, you can safely delete boot.wim, install.wim, X13-49120.exe files, Vista Directory (created in step 2), cdimage.exe file and  Vistax86.iso files from your root drive.

You can now use the newly created bootable DVD to install Vista Ultimate Upgrade.
