SLT's new ADSL package: Good or Bad?

Posted by TEAM FILEnetworks | 3/25/2007 | | 10 Comments »

Sri lanka Telecom (The incumbent fixed line operator in Srilanka), in its latest drive to boost subscriber base, has re-branded SLT ADSL as SLT Broadband and launched a new budget ADSL package to capture new market segments. Is the new package as beneficial as it sounds?

New ADSL packge Features and conditions

  • Monthly rental Rs.1000/=
  • Usage Allowance 1GB and additional usage will be charged Rs.250/= for each 250MB blocks
  • Connection fee Rs.500/=
  • Download 512Kbps and upload 128Kbps
  • Available in all current ADSL areas

Usage allowance term simply means that you will be charged extra if your usage (Web surfing, e-mail checking, downloading, TV/radio streaming or basically anything which you do using SLT ADSL connection) exceeds 1GB.

In our opinion, the package is not worth it. What can you do with a 1GB limit on your ass? 1GB might have been a huge amount some years back but this is the information age for fucks sake! Even a simple login to Windows Live Mail is bound to consume more than 2MB per try. Your 1GB limit will exceed before you know it and you might even end up paying a rental higher than for ADSL Home Express (You download 2.25GB --> You pay Rs 2250 which is the same amount as the monthly rental for Home Express package)

Don't even think about downloading torrents or software using this connection as you will end up with a huge monthly bill due to additional usage charge.

The Internet evolves, file sizes increase, traffic consumption goes up, web services are born, everything is downloadable, SLT puts a 1GB limit to its budget 'broadband' connection. It just doesn't make sense.

Conclusion:

Stay away from the Rs 1000 package. It's basically a faster dial up connection. If you are planning to upgrade to ADSL go for the Home Express package (512K Up/ 128K Down, Rs 2250 per month, unlimited usage) and experience Internet without restrictions or fear of exceeded bandwidth limitations.

After team Paradox broke Windows Vista's activation system with an ingenious BIOS emulation crack, many other crackers have been updating and adding enhancements to Paradox's crack. One such popular crack (which added automation to the whole cracking process) was released by cLoNy. Now, STRO has released another new version which features a sleek UI and more options!

Latest enhancement to the Paradox crack allows the users to select the brand of the computer which's BIOS they wish to emulate. Enhanced crack also lets you choose OEM logos of your choice. Also included in the package is the Windows Vista Product ID Checker tool.

Does this crack involve any BIOS modification?

No, It does not flash or modify your BIOS in any way. The crack adds a software driver which runs as a background process in Windows Vista environment. This driver will emulate the BIOS of an OEM (branded) computer of your choice.

Does this work on 64 bit versions?

There is a high chance that this crack will work on 64-bit Vista versions. However, it has failed on 64-bit versions occasionally due to unknown reasons.

Does this work on Ultimate version of Vista?

This should work on all versions of Vista including the ultimate version. In rare occasions, it has failed to activate Vista versions which were not clean installed (upgraded over XP).

Will my BIOS information display change?

The emulated BIOS information will be shown in software environments. If you installed an OEM logo, it will be displayed in My computer just like in branded personal computers.

USB Flash drives have become vastly popular during recent times. Almost everyone who work in the IT industry (and many other industries) nowadays possess one of these magic sticks. Ease of use, good performance and large capacity have made the flash drives a must have for most individuals who work with computers. But one should be extremely careful when plugging your flash drive to public computers. Uninvited visitors may sneak into your PC through USB flash drives and may screw your computer and destroy data.

Judging by the emails we get, one of the most common viruses that spread through USB drives is the 'New Malware.j' (McAfee detection) virus. you'll know that you have this virus when folders in your flash drive (or hard drive) are converted to .exe files which cannot be opened in explorer. Hold on to your testicles. Your data is not lost. You can recover the folders using a simple attribute command.

1. Open start menu --> run. Type cmd and press enter. Command Prompt will open.

2. Navigate to the drive/folder which contains the screwed up folders (.exe files with folder name), using the command prompt. Note: Don't execute the command on your system drive, on which Windows is installed. (you will not be able to do so even if you tried)

3. Execute the following command to restore folders.

X:\attrib -S -H *.* /s /d

(Where X is the name of drive which was affected by virus)

4. Browse to location using my computer. You should be able to see the lost folders now. It is now safe to delete the .exe files with folder names.

If only one folder is affected, you can use the following attrib command to recover it:

X:\attrib -S -H C:\ScrewedLocation\Foldername /s /d

(Where ScrewedLocation is the parent folder and Foldername is the name of affected folder.)

What this virus does is simple. It doesn't delete any of your folders. Instead, it uses the attrib command with +S and +H switches to make the folders hidden, system folders. Once a folder is given +S, it will not be visible in explorer (even with hidden files on) because Windows File Protection will treat it as a protected system folder.

Another virus that circulates via flash drives is the RavMon virus. Symptoms of infection will be that .exe files with the same name as folder names created in every directory  of flash drive including inside subdirectories. You pendrive's autorun menu will default to a program named "Auto". You will not be able to double click and open the pen drive from my computer.

Usually, a format of the pen drive should get rid of the virus. but before that, make sure you use an AntiVirus app to scan and clean the infected exes or delete them manually.

Recommended Anti Virus application by FILEnetworks is: McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i + AntiSpyware module enterprise 8.5i or later. Whatever the AntiVirus app you sure, make sure you keep it updated with latest definition files.
