Recuva is a nice little software that will save your ass in such events. It can restore files that were accidentally deleted, files deleted by viruses and files lost due to system crashes.

Recuva can restore files deleted from some removable media such as memory sticks and flash drives as well. However, there is no guarantee that you will be able to recover each and every deleted file on all occasions using this application. In some cases it will work and in some cases it won’t – you should never think of it as a backup tool. Recuva is developed by the same folks who develop CCleaner. Yay! Version 2009 of Tuneup Utilities English is finally released. There was a German version released a few days earlier but now non German users can rejoice as the Final English version is out. Back in the early 2000s, I used to be a fan of Norton Utilities. However when Symantec began releasing basically the same set of utilities every year with only minor changes, I got pretty tired of it. Been using TuneUp Utilities for almost two years now and I’ve got to say it’s one of the best system utilities suites currently around. TuneUp Utilities usually does a fine job on system optimization and it won't add a thousand startup entries or services that take half the system resources like some software suites that are supposed to optimize your system.

The first new feature you will notice in version 2009 will be the revamped user interface. A new utility named Speed Optimizer has also been added. Improvements have been made to TuneUp Drive Defrag, TuneUp System Control, TuneUp Uninstall Manager, TuneUp Startup Manager, TuneUp Styler and TuneUp Registry Cleaner. Hiren’s BootCD is a bootable ISO image which contains over 100 diagnostics utilities (see list below). You can burn the ISO to a CD and boot up your computer with it to diagnose hardware and software problems your may encounter on your PC.Since it’s bootable, it doesn't matter if you can get Windows (or other OS) to boot up or not. The set of utilities this app integrated is astounding; from file recovery tools to partition managers, Hiren’s BootCD seem to have an utility to diagnose and repair every possible problem you can imagine happen to a computer.

As you may have noted, the title says something about a keyboard patch. Well it allows you to patch the ISO image so that it supports the keyboard layout you are using. This feature will be useful to people who use keyboard layouts other than US Keyboard (You don’t want to mix up the keys for ‘disk check’ and ‘destroy-all-partitions’ now do you?).

I’ve had the misfortune of losing data several times due to hardware failure (and due to the lazyness to back up data).  Here is a nice little program that may save your ass in the event of a data loss due to hardware failure or physical damages. AnyReader can read corrupted or damaged CDs, DVDs, LAN-Drives, flash memory, ZIP disks and floppy disks and recover the data which the operating system is unable to read. If you are getting CRC errors while trying to copy data from your discs or if it takes an unusually long time to copy data from/to your discs, try using AnyReader. I wouldn’t say that this app would work miracles and recover data from a smashed up hard drive but it sure does work is less serious cases.

I came across this nice little utility named HDDlife Pro while browsing a support forum. Installed it for the hell of it but ended up actually liking the app for it's good set of features and nice interface.
