Windows Defender is free security product for Windows users, developed by Microsoft itself. Defender is bundled together with Windows Vista and in some versions of Windows XP. Personally, I don't use this application myself since i use a different dedicated security product which offers both virus and spyware protection whereas Defender focuses more on spyware. All in all it's a fairly decent security product and there seem to be many people using it.

It will be needless to say that ESET's NOD32 Anti Virus software is now one of the most popular security products in the world. As with any popular products, the demand for the product was high, even among software pirates. There were many pirated versions of ESET NOD32 and ESET Smart Security floating around the new for a while. Not only did these versions carry the full feature set, they could also download virus definition updates - a critical factor with any security product.

Many of these pirated versions were 'extended' trial versions. The cracks would extend the normal 30 day trial period to some 15000+ or 24000+ days. These 'extended' trials could connect to ESET official update servers and download latest definition updates just like any legit version.

In addition to the extended trials, there was another form of workaround for getting virus definition updates. These were 3rd party update servers. These servers, run by various individuals, were mirrors of ESET update servers but sans the authentication so that any pirated user could connect and download updates without issues. This method is not that popular since many go offline quickly and majority of the others get blocked by ESET.

However, a recent server upgrade by ESET may have crashed the party for users of pirated ESET products. The server upgrade has rendered most of the 'extended' trial versions useless. Although the trial period would still read as 15000+ or 24000+ days, the clients will no longer receive latest updates even when there are newer definition files available. Cracked versions will return the message "The virus signature database is current" even when it is not.

There is currently no permanent workaround that i know of to counter this latest move by ESET. However there is the odd exception such as some of the older cracks still working to date on some platforms and some beginning to work after a reinstall. Perhaps a scene group or a P2P group would be able to find a 'PROPER' crack in the near future.

Usually, ESET delivers two or three virus definition updates a day for ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 anti virus products. However, I noticed that my NOD32 had not updated for three days even though auto update was enabled. Whenever I tried a manual update, it came up with the message "The installed virus signature database is current". This was very unlike ESET and obviously something had to be wrong, and it was.

When I checked on ESET site, the virus definitions i had installed were not the latest. I had missed around 4-5 updates although NOD32 internal updater was saying my signature were up to date. Further searching on the net suggested that many other users were having the same problem.

How to verify if there is a problem with your update

First of all, you need to check if you actually have this problem with your installation of NOD32. It would be pointless to try and fix a non existent problem.

1. Right click your NOD32 taskbar icon and click 'open window'.

2. Select 'Update' from the left hand panel. Click on 'Update virus signature database'. If an update is being done, wait for it to finish.

2. Now select 'protection status' from left hand panel.

3. Note the number next to "Version of virus signature database"

4. Click here to visit ESET official page on virus definition updates. Verify the latest definition version listed on this page matches with your NOD32's definitions version (found in step 3).

If the two version numbers match, you do not have any update issues. If they don't then there is a problem so read on.

Workaround

At first, i though the problem was limited to pirated versions of NOD32. But according to posts made in several online forums, this is a problem with ESET's servers and affected legitimate versions of ESET products as well. Here is what i did to get around the problem:

(I use a extended trial version of NOD32. This workaround may or may not work for you, depending on the version and nature of your NOD32).

1. Manually delete the update cache of NOD32 or ESS. In Vista, browse to C:\ProgramData\ESET\ESET NOD32 Antivirus\ or C:\ProgramData\ESET\ESET Smart Security\ (depending on which software you have).Delete the updfiles directory

2. Right click your NOD32 taskbar icon and click 'open window'. On bottom left corner, toggle 'advanced mode' if not already selected.

3. Now select 'setup' from left hand panel. Select 'Enter entire advanced setup tree'. Select 'Update' from left hand panel of the window that pops up.

4. Click the 'Edit' button next to the 'Update server' drop down menu. Enter http://u49.eset.com/eset_eval on the top text field and press add. Press ok to close the dialog box. Now select the newly inserted server from the 'Update server' drop down menu and press ok.

Try a manual update now or wait for auto update. It worked for me.

Here is some good news for NOD32 users who are tired of getting their keys blacklisted. If you follow the method described below, you will no longer be needing a key to update your copy of NOD32 Antivirus 3.0 or ESET Smart Security (and this works with trial versions). The process does not involve cracking or doing any sort of modification to the core files of above mentioned programs.

What is an alternative update server?

This way you can continue to use this security products after the trial. I'll do my best to keep this updates running so far I can. There are hourly checks between this server and ESET servers. What are the supported products?

Will it work forever?

There is no guarantee that it will work forever. It has been 10 days since server launch and has been working fine since. If the creator decides to pull the plug on the server, there will be no more updates. Only solution will be to apply a patch or to find another update server.

VirusTotal is a free online service which scans and reports user uploaded files for malware. Users can upload suspicious files to VirusTotal and the service uses 32 different anti virus engines to scan the file. Once scanning is complete, a detailed report one the scan results (sorted by scan engine) will be shown. This service is extremely useful when you come across dodgy and suspicious looking key generators, cracktros, cracks , etc.

In addition to manual uploading, VirusTotal offers two alternative methods to submit files to the service. You can submit via e-mail or install the context menu integrator for right-click-and-upload facility.

Sending files by email

Create a new message with scan@virustotal.com as destination address of your email.

1. Write SCAN in the Subject field.
2. Attach the file to be scanned. Such file must not exceed 10 MB in size. If the attached file is larger, the system will reject it automatically.
3. You will receive an email with a report of the file analysis. Response time will vary depending on the load of the system at the time of placing your request.
