Here on FILEnetworks Blog, we talk about Direct Download Link (DDL) forums quite frequently in our DDL Forums section. Just like private torrent trackers, these sites offer easy access to latest movies, music, documentaries, games, TV shows and pretty much everything else that leak online. The internet is now full of video streaming sites such as YouTube, DailyMotion, MetaCafe and countless others. ADM or Alien Download Manager is a new download manager that supports several one click hosting services including Hotfile, Netload, Rapidshare, Storage.to, Depositfiles and Megaupload. It’s a lightweight tool that does not even require installing – all you need to do is to extract the zip archive and run adm.exe. This means you can even carry it around it your USB flash drive. Currently the software is at version 0.1 – which looks like the first public build. There aren’t many extra features built into ADM other than the basics just yet but IMHO this is a software worth checking out.

So far I only used this app to download a file from RapidShare and it worked quite well. It detected the wait times on a free account and automatically started the download after the specified time. Currently only 6 one click hosting services are supported but this should soon expand in the next few releases, according to the developer.

One of the most annoying things associated with online video streaming is stuttering and hiccups. Down here in Sri Lanka, I always find it difficult to play some of those YouTube HD videos during daytime. Even though plenty of bandwidth is available, video streaming rarely utilizes the available network resources. So I’ve been on the lookout for a ‘download manager’ sort of thing for online video. Out of the several applications I’ve so far stumbled across, Speedbit Video Accelerator (SVA) definitely looked interesting. It promises to “make your videos stream faster and play smoother, reducing buffering problems and video "hiccups”.

If it makes any difference, this software is developed by Speedbit, makers of the infamous Download Manager Plus (DAP). Video Accelerator been around for a while (since 2007) and Speedbit have just released v3.0 beta with several major features. I’ve only used this application for a few minutes and so far with somewhat mixed results. There definitely was an improvement with streaming video but it wasn’t earth shattering. Some people have reported having BSOD errors after installing this software but I have not experienced any crashes so far (if you get any, just uninstall SVA, that should fix it).

There are two main versions of SVA available – the free edition and the premium edition. Free edition has everything the premium edition has, sans HD video streaming acceleration and iTunes acceleration. Also note that the free version is ad-supported (adware is not installed in your machine, but ads are served from within the app jut like in Windows Live Messenger).

Miro is a product that’s created quite a buzz in the past few months. It’s basically a HD video player with tight internet integration. You get access to more than 6000 free internet TV shows and podcasts and these can all be played right from Miro itself  – no need for additional codecs or software. Apart from video playback, Miro is capable of downloading shows to hard disk as well. A number of video sites such as YouTube, Blip and Google video are supported. Another great feature of this software is the support for RSS based BitTorrent downloads (powered by libtorrent).

If your favorite public BitTorrent site or private torrent tracker supports RSS, you can use Miro to automatically download the latest TV/movie releases. Just make sure that libtorrent is an allowed client on whatever site you use – Libtorrent engine is used by Miro for actual torrent download from the tracker.

A new version of Orbit Downloader has been released. This is an excellent free application that’ll allow you to download files not only from HTTP, FTP protocols but also from social video sites, one click hosting sites and even via streaming protocols such as RTSP/MMS. Latest version of Orbit downloader (v2.8.6) includes several minor bugfixes over the previous build.

Personally, this is one of my favorite applications. Oribit downloader eliminates the need to have several different programs installed in order to download files from various social media sites and one click hosting sites. Although somewhat overshadowed by BitTorrent nowadays, FTP is still a good medium to distribute large files such as movies and games online. When it comes to downloading from FTP servers, FileZilla is one of the most widely used clients. For some reason, many people are unaware of the simplicity of FileZilla and the vast amount of ‘content’ (you know what we mean) that can be obtained through it. In this post, we explain where to download this software and how to use it to access open and password protected FTP servers.

Where to download the latest version FileZilla?

FileZilla is free software and it supports Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. It’s only about 4MB in file size. You can download the latest available stable version of FileZilla directly from the official download page.

How to access normal and password protected FTP servers using FileZilla?

This is easy. A non password protected FTP server address follows a similar format to the ones mentioned below:
ftp://server:port/ or sometimes ftp://server

Sometimes, usernames and passwords to access the server can be embedded in the FTP server address. In this case the URL will follow a similar format to ftp://user:password@server:port
For example, ftp://leech:l33ch@61.145.123.141:5632/
This can be broken down as

• Username = leech
• Password = l33ch
• Server = 61.145.123.141
• Port = 5632

To access the FTP server using FileZilla, all you have to do is to paste the entire URL in the ‘Host"’ field below the menu bar. If the username and password details are embedded in the address as above, FileZilla will automatically fill the rest of the fields and connect you to the server. If the server requires login and the username and password are not included in the URL, you need to enter them manually in username, password fields below the menu bar. Once you are connected to the server, you can browse through it’s content just like in Windows explorer. To download a file, simply double click it.

P.S – The FTP link ftp://leech:l33ch@61.145.123.141:5632/ is real. Just connect to it and browse the contents – you’ll be surprised (and maybe pleased :D )

Download Accelerator Plus (DAP) is one of the best download managers currently available. Apart from accelerating your download speeds, it can also manage your downloads, organize downloaded files, check downloaded files for viruses and malware, pause and resume downloads, segmented downloading, integrate into popular web browsers (Firefox, IE, opera and so on) and more.

Although the software is advertised with catchy phrases such as “400% download speed increases”, DAP can only increase the download speed as much as your connection bandwidth permits. However as most web browser’s default download managers do not utilize maximum connection speed, DAP is a very useful software to have. Most of us are aware of and have used web mapping services such as Google Maps, Yahoo! Maps or Microsoft Maps (Live Search Maps). Although all these services offer detailed maps of the world for online viewing, none of them support downloading or saving map images to users hard drives.
