Note/Update: To update NOD32 version 3.0 and ESET Smart Security version 3.0, see this article. This post only applies to version 2.70.39 and below.

Here is some good news for NOD32 users who are tired of getting their keys blacklisted. If you follow the method described below, you will no longer be needing a key to update your copy of NOD32 (and this works with trial versions). The process does not involve cracking or doing any sort of modifications to NOD32 core files.

Before you read further, note that this method will only works for NOD32 2.70.39 and versions below that. This will not on ESET Smart Security 3.0 or NOD32 3.0 versions. If you were wondering, there is no difference between version 2.70.39 and version 3.0 in terms of detection capabilities. If you are inspired by fancy user interfaces, then 3.0 will appeal to you. Otherwise 2.70.39 is more than enough.

Here goes:

1. Get hold of a copy of NOD32 version 2.70.39. Official web page at www.eset.com no longer offers this version so you may have to search various torrent sites.

2. If the torrent you downloaded comes with a patch or a fix, DO NOT APLLY it. Just install the standard NOD32 program with trial options.

3. Once the install is done and reboot is completed, double click the tray icon to launch NOD32 control center.

4. In Control Center, Go to Update ---> Update. Click on Setup

6. Click on the "Servers" Button. Click add.

7. A dialog box will pop up. Enter http://nod32.nohack.cn and press ok.

8. Press ok again to close the "Servers" window.

9. You will have the "Setup of Automatic Updates" window still open. From there set the newly entered server. (choose http://nod32.nohack.cn from the drop down menu near "Location").

10. Press ok. You should now be able to update NOD32 without issues. The server which you just entered does not validate usernames or passwords so there will be no fear of trial expirations or keys getting blacklisted.

What happens here is that you are downloading updates from a 3rd party update server based in China instead from ESETs servers which require authentication. According to our experience this server is secure. If you are having doubts, you can compare its legitimacy with ESET server using NOD32View tool and see for yourself.

Ever since this blog's launch, we've been recommending users to use Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise as their primary security software. But time has now come to change that. There is a new king of he hill; NOD32 from ESET.

First of all, let us justify our decision to recommend NOD32 over Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise (VSE):

1. Since the introduction of Mcafee 5000.194 scan engine, ActiveShield service may sometimes consume up to 45MB of physical memory, making it a resource hog. NOD32 on the other hand is very light on system resources and features faster scan times. NOD32 Resident scanner wont consume more than 20MB of RAM most of the time.

Mcafee has released the latest version of their corporate antivirus software; VirusScan enterprise. If you are a frequent visitor to this blog, you might remember our post about VSE 8.0i. 8.5i is even more advanced that 8.0i and features several different protection mechanisms never before seen in an AntiVirus product. ViruScan Enterprise 8.5i contains a combination of AntiVirus, Firewall and IPS features which turns it into a complete security solution.  Of course this doesn't feature a star-glittering, lamer oriented, resource consuming, bloated interface as in Norton Antivirus, but don't let the looks fool you. At the heart of VirusScan enterprise 8.5i runs the Mcafee's 5100 series scanning engine which is capable of decimating more that 21000 security threats (including spyware, adware and rootkit detection) in a wide range of categories. And it doesn't occupy half the system RAM as most major security software occupy.

- Incremental engine component updates. Allows  engine components to be updated without updating the entire engine. The engine version, displayed in the VirusScan  Enterprise "About" dialog box, shows both the engine series and the latest incremental

- Ability to use different sets of detection definition (DAT) files at the same time. For example, the engine can access the 
anti-virus, buffer overflow, and access protection DAT files simultaneously. This provides more efficient scanning and

- Detection of rootkits in memory. The on-demand scanner can be configured to scan system memory for installed rootkits. Rootkits conceal running processes and files or system data, and are a
threat if an intruder uses the rootkit to  maintain access to a system without the user’s knowledge.

- Enhanced Access Protection. This feature prevents unwanted changes by restricting access to specified ports,files and folders, shares, registry keys and values.The rules have been enhanced to expand exclusion capability and provide better protection.

- Protection levels. When you install the  product, you choose whether to enable  "Standard Protection" or "Maximum Protection" 
rules as the default.

- Enhanced On Access Spyware and Adware detection with AntiSpyware Enterprise Module.
